2019 gardening thread

my garden went kaput. all i have left is the basil and parsley, and the Italian green peppers, and planted flowers.

i had to pull up the eggplant, it only had like 4 flowers after all these weeks.

so it was useless wasting water on it.

i have absolutely no idea why the garden crapped out this year.
Mine did, too. It wasn't hot enough this year and the soil hasn't been worked in a long time. Needs lots of amendments to break up the clay. Amd I just didn't have the time to devote to it that I've had before. Too many other projects that need to be done.

I don't feel too bad, though. Couple of ol'phart friends who have been gardening for decades didn't do very well either. The summer was just too cool this year.

i think i had posted that we had a lot of rain, that pushed back planting season for me. yes i know many people too that just did not have a good year, let alone a great year.

but i also used a different garden additive. instead of the usual packaged composted manure, i used Scott's blended (for lack of having that bag with me still) manure and other garden enhancers.

but, the basil, parsley, and Italian green peppers grew like crazy, and just this past saturday, i had to pull out the herbs..the peppers are still growing, so i don;t think that the Scott's product was the problem, over way too much rain this year.

As you all know I am a city dweller an have no land to speak of. But this time I put in a valid effort to research allotment gardens. Basically I would be renting some city owned land to grow a garden.

I can't apply for an allotment until the 19th of this month. My predictions will be,
  1. I forget to apply.
  2. I will forget that I applied and was granted one.
  3. I will plant seeds and then forget that I have a garden.
Anywayz , if I get a plot I would like to do some tomatoes, potatoes, peas and onions.
So which one happened?

So which one happened?
Neither. I did get a call from the community garden people but I said I was no longer interested.
I was got to do some gardening in pots but I spent a metric shit ton on new furniture and then the season got started so late this year that it didn't makes sense to plant.

Son come waltzing threw door big bag of squash his buddy gave him.....I told him didn't I say I was not going to do this no more....he gives me a quick peck on the cheeks and says I love you mom as he goes bouncing out the door. Spent most of this day preserving squash for the freeze. Geesh the wonder of it all.

you`re a good Mom
that's why you do it
you can`t say no to your kids

I can`t either
I came in with 1/2 bushel of tomatoes recently and my wife gave me that look
later on we made tomatoe and basil soup, stuff is so good I can drink it from a jar

Hey! As I can see, you have a rich experience. I know, this is an old thread and it's actually not about this, but... What kind of a lawn edger do you use? My old man left this world last year and now I have a huge lawn with VERY tall grass and I don't know, how to deal with this problem. I want to turn it into a beautiful garden.

just get a "weed whacker" that has an adjustable head to take care of the edging.

battery power or electric, your choice.

that's all i used when i had my lawn.

mine was a toro.

Yeah there's also piston engines or gas powered, your choice.
piston and gas engines are the same damned thing...quack...quack.

full on battery powered, or electrical cord types.....you quackhead...

anyone else would have gotten that.....go build something, take another 24 years, so you won't be here that much......quack..quack.

Battery powered is electric, Ravioli Boy (ardee)

no, there is a battery installed into the unit, for battery power. usually DC power

the corded ones use electricity from the wall socket, using AC current turned into DC current and have NO battery........duh.....

What the hell form of energy do batteries store? 🤣

CHEMICAL energy.........“A battery is a device that is able to store electrical energy in the form of chemical energy, and convert that energy into electricity,” says Antoine Allanore, a postdoctoral associate at MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

now go build something for the next 29 years.....

Fuck sake. You guys will debate about anything.

@StroggCore
With a large yard, gas powered is the way to go. Get one of those Craftsman ones from Lowes that you can get several attachments for. I believe one of the attachments is an edger. I have the regular string type weed eater and the steel blade brush cutter for mine. I have 4 1/2 acres to deal with. It does a nice job. My next attachment purchase is going to be the pole saw.
