2018 gardening thread

I think fertile means it will sprout and grow. Some factories over heat it and do other stuff to popcorn before it hits the stores
and it won`t sprout

So yesterday I checked the horseradish bed and low and behold that stuff has been prolificating all winter long. I only planted four or (maybe six) sprouts last year after I cut it. I see the four big pieces from last year but all around those I have new sproutlings. Check it out.

Whoa! Right? This is going to be an interesting year for horseradish. I thought about moving the horseradish to a full size bed this year but I’m going to hold off and see what this stuff does.

every little bit of root you left in the ground can make a new plant, when I was growing horseradish I pit treated 2x10's into the ground to stop it from spreading if you plant it in the garden, given time it will take over the garden and it is hell to stop

A guy over at another board grows the variety for popcorn. If I had the space I’d try that myself. Seems kinda interesting.

That makes sense. So the new growth isn’t from the cuttings I reburied after digging up the roots, clipping them, and replanting it’s more from what I left (unknowingly) in the ground from last year. When I dug them up last year each big root had some little off shoot roots. Some musta been small enough I either didn’t see them because they broke off or I didn’t take the time to get them out.

they tell me you can`t grow it near regular corn.Since I don`t have any corn planted in a country mile,I`ll give it a try

My horseradish is contained in a large tree pot from a nursery that I have buried in the ground now. I started with one tiny rhizome last year, so I didn't pull it. I've got at least one offspring from it. Might have more later.

Walked the dogs last night after dinner. Looked my garden over. Most of it has been reduced to stems. It’s pretty pathetic looking. Even the kale (which rarely gets touched) has been devoured with a ferocity like I’ve never seen before.
Out of the corner of eye I see movement. I look over at the neighbors yard and there’s three adult rabbits just chillin in the yard and then I look around and see another one just lookin back at me. That little fuck was laughing on the inside I know it!

So...... I guess I can look forward to garlic and horseradish cause they haven’t touched that. If they go after my Lima’s I blow the whole damn yard up and nobody gets nuthin!

We just got home from Barbee`s greenhouse. The old Barbee guy in coveralls pulls out a wrinkled up piece of paper and pencil and figures your bill.I love the old way
We bought 2 flats of plants plus 3 singles
36.00 total-can`t beat the price.36 plants a flat.Got 36 German Johnson tomatoes,plus some crooked neck squash,bell peppers,banana peppers,jalapenos,and some other kind of squash
they are going in the ground next week.Too wet now
we have a Full Pink Moon coming up according to the alamac. We`re late planting but it will be ok.

What is the Pink Moon?
April’s Full Moon, the Full Pink Moon, heralds the appearance of the “moss pink,” or wild ground phlox—one of the first spring flowers. It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon.
These names were not invented by The Old Farmer’s Almanac. They were used by early Colonial Americans—who learned the names from the local Native Americans; time was not recorded by using the months of the Julian or Gregorian calendar. Many tribes kept track of time by observing the seasons and lunar months, although there was much variability. The name itself usually described some activity that occurred during that time in their location.

people now a days know very little about these ancient people and their knowledge of the Earth and Sky
myself included

There's still snow on the Micas, so still a tad early for direct sowing. But I think I'll take the risk and get some radishes, carrots, lettuce, beans and watermelons in the ground.

Tomatoes and peppers look good for being pampered indoors. They sure do get annoyed when I put them outside for a few hours. I'm starting my sweet peas indoors today. Soaked the seeds overnight and I'll put 'em in pots later.

Horseradish and garlic are doing well.

What’s your last frost date? Ours is May 10 I believe. I know of one place that uses pen and paper to figure the bill. I like going to “older” greenhouses that’s been around a long time. They have a different feel.
