2017 gardening thread.

we will be getting buried in nearly 2 feet of snow, and most likely 8 foot drifts. (in my yard)

i don;t think the panting season will start until labor day, columbus day the latest.

NO JOKE!
I have a pal living near Baltimore who I'm always giving a bad time because he lives in zone 7 and is always behind me (zone 6). They're calling for 18" in his area this week.

Huh? Looks like you're behind him.

Baltimore is zone 7 according to USDA.
Yeah.

On the map you're two shades of green darker.

Define "behind"...

I mean in this context.

:D

I'd define it as since the lower numbers are north, and planting season begins earlier in the south, he can plant before you can. So you're behind him. o_O

it it doesn't make sense to me either.
I just I just figured it was because the ocean buffers the temperatures there.

:dunno:

That's the limit of my expertise here.

I just had nothing better to do than pick on you. Cuz I already done picked on everyone else.

Except that dchawk81 guy. I left him alone cuz Injun got to him first and she was kinda brutal.

I think that map I posted is from 2012 anyway. :D

garlic..?? yes they love the cold, usually recommended that we do not store them in the fridge, but in a bowl, on the counter top....(or around our necks, to ward off the evil duck)
They've been on the top shelf by the water heater all winter.

ok, at least you know, they are alive and well. you could have even planted it (or them) in flower pots then transfer them in the spring.
I followed the directions of the local master gardeners and planted 'em 2" down with lots of "organic material." which is basically last year's fallen leaves and/or grass clippings. I needed to rake under the back porch anyway.

when i planted garlic, i'd used leaves, and i tried shredded newspapers (i have no grass), and then cover that with burlap. it is only to keep the frost off, not to keep it warm. but also, the burlap screws with cats that want to use the garden as thier litter box, and screws with the squirrels that want to bury thier nuts. dogs just crap on it.

i don't follow much of the master gardeners anymore. like maybe you, i have been gardening for a long time.

then too...no stinking master gardener ever responds to my letters or emails on how to grow ravioli's....some "master" gardeners they are.

bastards.....

We only have one cat in the neighborhood and the squirrels wait until the strawberries are almost ripe before raiding the garden. I'm considering pepper spray for them this year.

Speaking of garlic, I just pickled some garlic and it turned a blueish green. I have heard of that but, I could not rememer what i had heard.I Google it and it is a chemical reaction,Perfectly safe to eat.
This is going to be epic!
You are eating garlic and it is blue? LOL:biglaugh:

i have tried (with success) either coyote pee or wolf pee, from a feed/grain store.

about $15.00 for about 10 ounces.>???

(i never asked how THEY get it)

i'd squirt (no pun) the pee around the perimeter of the garden only. damn squirrels, cats, and dogs avoided it.

i also have made up a concoction of cayenne pepper, garlic, onion powder and sprinkle that all onto the garden. orange peels ward off cats.

all of these are safer than the other types of "shoo-away"(non-safe chemicals for veggie gardens) found at Lowes, Home Depot, maybe even Maynerds......

Most things, I have pretty good handle on. If I'm not familiar with something, I go to their website for the basics. Did a lot of referencing last year just because it was my first year planting in this zone.
