“Nuclear verdict” kills 540 truck carrier

Maybe he knows something we don't.

What's your source on the story that they were forced into e-logs? That's the story I've always heard but it's always been from the rumor mill.

I don't know when they went to e-logs but it was before I was trucking. I remember they sent a recruiter to the community college and he started bragging up their paperless logs and we laughed at him. That was in 2004.
I dunno if any of us will ever know the actual truth as everything you can read on line says that it was Werner’s idea and entered the agreement with the FHWA in June of 98 to test the program to improve compliance and saftey.

I know other companies got audited and was found out of compliance and threatened to be shut down without forcing compliance and the easiest method being jumping on board with AOBRD. Learned that in a class at TMC.

Like I said, lots of shady shit used to happen before over regulation. And I don’t think the story I know or the story @Hammer166 is telling is the whole truth in and of it’s self and none of us are CL Werner so we will never know.

I can't recall Hammer ever posting bullshit though.
He's the Encyclopedia of Useless Knowledge. He seemed pretty certain of his words too. So I'm guessing he knows something.

He's been trucking way longer than either of us too.
Weener's website says they started in 1998, and got an exemption from paper logs in 2004.

:dunno:
So,... does that mean that for 5 or 6 years they had to run both e-log and paper? If that's the case they must've either had to pay really well or they aimed really low in hiring, like Carolina Cargo does. My guess is the latter.

The point of the 98 agreement was so they could run a percentage of the fleet on AOBRD only. It was the pilot group that started it. But, it wouldn’t surprise me if werner got into some shit over non-compliance. It may have been his idea and he may have piloted the program. But nothing is done with our necessity. Sure it would make audits cheaper because less clerical hours and less fines. Like I said I think there is some truth to both sides of the coin on this one.

Also, I never said @Hammer166 was full of shit. He’s been around trucking a long time. So was my dad (since 62) and my mom (since 79). I tend to take a lot of what all three parties say pretty much to heart cuz I wasn’t in it back then. But former tells a different story than the latter two so. If old hands have conflicts in stories I assume they both have a truth to them.

Then everyone in the world should stop perpetuating it. Your are the only person I have ever heard of who thinks Werner wasn’t mandated by the government to do it. Even @Sinister who doesn’t typically agree with anything I say will sing that same song.
Yeah I always thought they were forced into it too.

Holy fuck! Did I sit at the lunch counter by mistake?

As was well documented in all the industry tags at the time, Werner approached the Feds about this. The integration of real-time HOS directly into dispatch was a game changer. Qualcomm bought the rights from Werner within days of Werner's agreement with the Feds. Qualcomm Obtains Rights to Werner Enterprises' Paperless Log System | Qualcomm

The big carriers were already running fairly legal when this went down, and there were far worse offenders in the HOS game. But y'all have already decided that the lunch counter version is reality, despite the fact the anything you can find googling gives the correct story. It would have been headline making if a carrier the size of Werner was threatened with being shutdown. All this shows the strength of urban legends.

Qualcomm buying it to resell doesn't mean Werner wasn't forced into development of it.

I don’t believe everything I read in media. I don’t believe everything I hear either. As I said above I believe the truth lies somewhere in between.

Because I detest the spreading of such blatant misinformation, I dug these up. They plainly and clearly show Werner was the sole carrier to offer to participate in the electronic log pilot program, despite numerous extensions to entice other entrants.

The story of Werner being forced into this is just that, a trucker story. As someone of needs an inflow of information, the trucking industry press was one of things I devoured in the pre-mobile internet days to keep my sanity. I followed this story as it developed. And Werner was largely ridiculed by drivers for agreeing to do this. Who would willingly go to work for them and deal with the crap we are all dealing with since the ELD mandate?

Do I expect this to change your minds? Nah, I know human nature too well to expect that. But the truth is right in front of you, if you're willing to accept it.

And this is from testimony before a House subcommittee :

Looks forged.

The house subcommittee would never highlight documents in such a fashion. Who uses yellow highlighters anymore? There are so many fun colors to chose from.

That being said: this is one document that I didn’t pull up in my web search. I seen all the crap werner had on their website and all the crap that Qualcomm posted which also included the article from Qualcomm you posted earlier. While this makes it a voluntary action. I will have to side where the prof lies in this instance. And only because of the subcommittee paperwork. Websites and media can definitely be spun to look how the author wants. This looks pretty rigid and legal binding.
