yeah, in my earlier years before trucking, the garage i ran we only had a ford bronco as a road service truck. the costs of insurance on that was super low. the owner never wanted a tow truck, it was just easier to call our tow contractor, who was an AAA and ALA tow contractor.Back in early 90's I owned a towing and wrecker service and a garage.....even then my insurance for the towing service was about$3000.00 a month for just insurance. It is expensive .
The one pushing the $5 million coverage was a partner in, and is married to the owner of a law firm that specializes in big truck accidents.
On Oct. 10, Rep. Cartwright amended his financial disclosure statements, indicating that his wife, Marion Munley, earned a salary at Munley Law in 2017 and 2018. Cartwright’s wife’s occupation is of particular importance as the congressman introduced a bill, HR3781, that would raise the federal minimum insurance requirement for motor carriers from $750,000 to $4.923 million.
Ethics complaints
In response to the bill, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) raised concerns with the Office of Congressional Ethics.
On Sept. 23, the nonprofit organization asked for Cartwright to be investigated “for taking official action in violation of House ethics rules.”
In a second letter on Oct. 8, FACT alleged that Cartwright failed to disclose his wife’s income.
“For two consecutive years, in apparent direct violation of the Ethics in Government Act and its implementing regulations, Rep. Cartwright’s annual public financial disclosure failed to disclose his wife’s income from Munley Law PC, where she continues to work as a partner specializing in commercial truck accident cases,” FACT wrote.
I had a friend who was a truck driver who drop by the house when he was in my neck of the woods.....he was still pushing truck at age 73...but in good health. I can remember asking him when you going to hang this game up and retire. He always smile and say someday.....I hear from his wife occasionally now. Last I heard from her was that he finally retired.yeah, in my earlier years before trucking, the garage i ran we only had a ford bronco as a road service truck. the costs of insurance on that was super low. the owner never wanted a tow truck, it was just easier to call our tow contractor, who was an AAA and ALA tow contractor.
Yup! When a judge sets a precedence like this, everyone should be very nervous. This should be making every carrier and every broker nervous.
at this point, even a broker has been successfully sued for the actions of a driver.
This country has a dangerous shortage of benevolent snipers. The one pushing the $5 million coverage was a partner in, and is married to the owner of a law firm that specializes in big truck accidents.
FixedYup! When a judge sets a precedence like this, everyone should be very trigger happy .

ATA members are megas... who are usually self insured. Doing anything about insurance rates (which affect their competitors - smaller carriers and o/o's) is against their own interests. The insurance, postal, and IRS are the only private industries to be written into law. Two of the three have more power on you life than the actual government. Pretty crazy when you think about it. As I said before and I know the all knowing one disagrees with me but I hope the ATA gets some legislation pushed forcing **** like this to stop.
It’s not about rates. It’s about stopping the frivolous suits.ATA members are megas... who are usually self insured. Doing anything about insurance rates (which affect their competitors - smaller carriers and o/o's) is against their own interests.
A mega is more likely to be hammered by a nuclear verdict long before an o/o or small carrier.ATA members are megas... who are usually self insured. Doing anything about insurance rates (which affect their competitors - smaller carriers and o/o's) is against their own interests.
A Mega is also more likely to influence regulations and legislation. Just like the trucking strikes of the 70s if the big dogs aren’t on board nothing will change. They had the teamsters back then. They were the big dog. Today it’s the mega fleets. Sometimes you gotta dance with the devil man. No way around it to change anything in this industry.A mega is more likely to be hammered by a nuclear verdict long before an o/o or small carrier.
They're self-insured, which means they're funding their own misery. Rates charged to truckers like us are affected by what happens to them only in terms of the statistical chance that we're involved in an accident.A mega is more likely to be hammered by a nuclear verdict long before an o/o or small carrier.
That's a dance that wont benefit you as a small carrier owner. All I ever used to hear about that dance crap was how ATA bullshit would "level the field" against those cheating o/o's - translation: how they could make the competitions life more difficult by driving down rates to gain marketshare.A Mega is also more likely to influence regulations and legislation. I'd suggest you go talk to a more informed agent. They're self-insured, which means they're funding their own misery. Rates charged to truckers like us are affected by what happens to them only in terms of the statistical chance that we're involved in an accident.
Maybe you ought to buy some commercial truck insurance instead of lecturing the rest of us.I'd suggest you go talk to a more informed agent.
Either way, you as an owner operator should want legislation against bullshit lawsuits and achieving that goal sometimes requires things people don’t like. They're self-insured, which means they're funding their own misery. Sorry, that's not a dance - its sleeping with the enemy.
I believe he has commercial truck insurance. Most states won’t let you plate without it. Even a self insured company has policy purchases from insurance firms for catastrophic situations.Maybe you ought to buy some commercial truck insurance instead of lecturing the rest of us.
Your arrogant ignorance is shining again.Maybe you ought to buy some commercial truck insurance instead of lecturing the rest of us.
See my above post.Your arrogant ignorance is shining again.
The ability to be self insured is not as likely or prevalent as people think they are.
Most self insured incidents are for drivers going through flower beds and stupid stuff that shows up on YouTube, Facebook or Twitter.
Even Werner and others will be underwritten by a provider for catastrophic stuff for protection.

He reference is when I said the same thing to ganthony for telling owner / operators how insurance works. Even after he admitted he'd never bought it and never willI believe he has commercial truck insurance. Most states won’t let you plate without it.
