I am new to this forum but not trucking industry, need some help with how to handle warranty problems with Volvo Dealers... Have had numerous problems with this truck, just recently had fan clutch assembly replaced for the 3rd time, it did alot of damage this time and Volvo dealership is refusing to honor warranty from previous Volvo Dealer- part was less than 3 weeks old...Sad but True.

Steps taken
* contacted Volvo of North America(just get call center in N.C.).
* contacted Dealer Rep's.
* contacted Regional Rep.

I'm not sure what to tell you.

But how does a fan clutch cause damage? Did it come apart and send the fan cartwheeling under the hood or something?

Have you been operating in cold weather with the grill covered in the center? I've seen some guys operate with cardboard over the grill, and just a corner cut open or something. The hole needs to be front and center or the fan clutch will burn up, even when it's -20 outside.

I learned that the hard way once, with a Volvo 670, Cummins ISX. I had two 6" diameter holes, in the middle vertically but spaced apart. The mechanic who was bitching at me for 20 minutes said the hole has to be in the middle.

That is what happened it cartwheeled into the radiator but not because of the grill being covered, the part itself failed, we saved everything and have many pic's. Dealer in Denver tried to say solenoid was bad and caused bearings to seize up and then it broke apart. I will never buy a Volvo truck again, never met a shop it didn't like.

Does it have a Cummins at least?

Volvo engines are garbage.

Yeah, with the egr on the hot side of the motor, can't wait to trade it in, have some trucks with Detroit 60's and they take a beating and keep on ticking. Problems never seem to stop with the Volvo. I heard OOIDA was starting a case against Volvo over truck problems.

Welcome to Truckers Forum TM. Yes, even though the Volvo is a comfy rig in which to ride, there seems to be way too many mechanical and electrical issues, and the dealer warranty network just doesn't appear to be willing to get the bugs worked out. It may well be the undoing of the company where heavy trucks are concerned.

Volvo electrical issues are usually caused by the fact they want people to buy their crappy Volvo engines, so they don't bother working out the conflicts between the Cummins computer and the truck computer.

A Volvo without a Cummins isn't worth the space it takes up in the scrap-yard.

you might try saying you will get lawyer involved and see what they say. just remember that the dealer that is taking care of anothers is not making money. that is why not very helpful.sorry for your luck

What I don't get is why the dealerships don't get paid by the manufacturer for the repairs in a lot of cases. They're expected to perform warranty service for free. If the dealership is independently owned like a franchise, they should get paid by the manufacturer for warranty service.

#1 Dealerships DO NOT do warranty work for free. They get paid the same labor rate as they would if it were customer pay, and they get a percentage mark up on every part they install under warranty. So they make plenty. #2 Didn't you say it had a Cummins in it? If that's the case, then Volvo parts warranty does not apply since the fan hub is a Cummins part. Cummins is a separate entity and have their own warranty, it is not rolled in with the Standard warranty from Volvo. If it is a Volvo engine, there is likely parts warranty on at least one of the failures, depending on the situation (age of truck, if the part failed under the truck warranty initially, cause of failure, etc.) I can tell you that call center in NC is at the Volvo/Mack headquarters for North America, and is probably your best bet at getting anything done about your predicament. I guess you were expecting to ring in to the CEO?

The one and ONLY Volvo I ever drove was a 670 with a D13 engine and a 10 speed. The POS wouldn't pull a sick lot lizard out of bed. It spent more time on the side of the road than it did on it. Electrical problems were the biggest. Coming into N. Little Rock at night in the rain, all the lights just quit! Turns out the relays that control the lighting burned out. The radio worked off and on. Cruise would work one time and the next time you started it, the cruise quit. Inside lights were intermittent. Bunk lights never did work correctly. Once it left me on the side of the road in NM when it blew the pipe off the back of the turbo. It melted the plastic coolant recovery bucket, dumped all the extra coolant out, melted a bunch of wires and hoses. They made me sit on the side of the road for 13 hours because the boss refused to pay for the wrecker because he said it was under warranty. Volvo said the repairs were but towing was not.

Needless to say you could NOT run fast enough to give me another Volvo.

Detroit isn't making S60s anymore. Standard motor now is DD15.

You're better off with the ISX. Take it to a Cummins shop.
