Virginia Closes 18 Highway Rest Stops

The Virginia Department of Transportation closed 18 rest areas overnight to help cut reduce costs for the state's transportation department.

Crews will work throughout the day on Tuesday to change the last of signs leading into the facilities, according to a spokesperson for the state department.

All 18 rest stops will be completely shut down by 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Shutting the popular facilities because of tumbling transportation revenues has prompted wide opposition from the traveling public and the tourism and trucking industries.
