Nearly nine months after 19 rest areas were shuttered because of budget cuts in Virginia, all are back open for business, which amounts to good news for truckers.

The rest areas were reopened over a two-month period, beginning in mid-February. The remaining seven rest areas were reopened on Wednesday, April 14, a day earlier than promised.

Virginia’s new governor, Robert F. McDonnell, vowed on the campaign trail that if elected he would reopen the rest areas within 90 days of taking office, which he has done.

Read the entire article at LandLineMag.com

The article fails to mention that it was DimocRAT that closed Rest Areas, and, a Republican who reopened them. I thought that was worth mentioning. :tapeshut:

Virginia was very close to going down the crapper, nice that they now have a Gov. who seems to have a head on his shoulders, I take it that foolish idea to make a restricted toll road just for semi's is also scrapped? I have not heard anything about it for a while

Oh, I dunno, the article mentions niether party as far as I can see. Broke is broke...

I've been offered two loads int eh last 2 weeks to the DC area in VA. I'm sure whoever took them after I turned them down enjoyed the newly reopened rest areas.

Toll road or otherwise, that state needs to do something about the roads. I 95 from Richmond to DC and I 295 around Richmond suck big time. Might as well have a gravel road it would be smoother. From all the loose and broken asphalt scattered around it looks like a gravel road.

I can always count on 2xR to mention the unmentionable. You're a glutton for punishment, LOL.
What I'd like to know is how did they miraculously find the money to reopen? When they closed, they were supposedly so broke they couldn't afford to pay attention. It was a crisis that required drastic action.
Maybe they just stopped skimming from the till, who knows?

You know those conservative right wing whackos, they are so tight their asses squeak when they walk!

Fortunately I have not had to deliver in that area in years, though I did go to D.C. to re-visit the monuments and museums with some family last year, little bit different in a trailblazer then a big truck

Obama would probably take credit for this with his Recovery and Reinvestment act. Which considering the signs themselves cost about $3500 all said and done, simply HAS to have solved every problem int he US.

Don't believe Obama, just ask Obama.

Not sure what youre getting at, but I'm actually with you on this. I thought it weas really weird how the rest areas were miraculously opened also. Maybe we're in a new fiscal year? When were they closed?

Started about a year ago.
Gotta go back to around page 20 on Trucking Industry News Forum to start finding those threads.
Here's one.......... http://www.truckersforum.net/forum/...eas-will-eliminate-two-hour-time-limit-18541/

And this was a related issue going on at the time, which has since been resolved in favor of truckers (IOW, they backed down).

Funny, they say that the 2 hour limit has been resolved, and I still see signs that warn not to stay over 2 hours, and in other states as well. Some states have 8 hour limits, like Washington.

How the hell can a driver meet the 10 hour break requirement when the local jurisdictions won't let you park that long?

And try convincing the local yocals that Federal law trumps their local law, they seem to be more willing to throw you in jail and tow your rig then to actually find out what law is what

He could stop being scared to back in at a truck stop and park there!

I ain't disagreeing with you, but have you ever tried to find a parking spot at a t/s in central and northern Virginia on I-81/95 between 1600 and 0400? When you do find one, buy a lottery ticket, 'cause you are on a lucky streak

I never said I was afraid to back in at a truck stop, I said I prefer to pull in, to protect my tractor from damage caused by idiots and to get away from reefer madness.

Fact is, I almost never stay at a rest area, I am usually able to plan my trips well enough that I can stay at the truck stop of my own choosing.

That's exactly what we did in Virginia.
It wasn't easy, it took a lot of calls and letters from quite a few members here and elsewhere, but in the end they backed down.
As to why they left the signs up, I don't know, probably just for spite, but the point was made.

I've never had trouble on 81, 95 though I have had problems. But I usually can still find something in the back corner somewhere. It might be tight and a long walk to the bathrooms, but there is usually a few spots. I've generally always found rest area's to be full long before truckstops though. The 10 or so spots in a rest area filled up at sundown by the people who are scared of truckstops.

I didn't say you in particular, just he as in any driver. As you no doubt have noticed if you drive through a rest area around sundown it's full of swift/schneider/usexpress/crst/england/prime/stevens/ect...all the rookie companies...the ones who are scared to back in!
