I never could understand the whole concept behind feeling the need for a Truck Driver Appreciation Week. Sure I took their trinkets and ate the hot dogs but I drove Trucks all those years because it was something I enjoyed and to provide for my family.What about every other occupation that contributes to the economy and society?

I've enjoyed it as well, but it does demand more from a person and a family than just about any other job.

The resolution will likely go nowhere. If it did, however, it would be a great opportunity to use that time of year to bring the public up to speed on issue that drivers face, and potentially improve the industry from the drivers perspective.

I took the food. Didn't care about the trinkets. I'll always take free food unless it looks like a salmonella party.

I enjoy it compared to some of the other stuff I've done for money but it's certainly not my favorite. Maybe because I've always been local so it's always been basically shift work.

Nothing that is officially recognized, just something made up by the trucking industry, the ATA to be exact.

Back when I worked for Shell, in Port Everglades, the Exxon/Mobil terminal used to go in really big in that week. They had BBQ's, blood drives, gave out some really cool swag and the BBQ's, did I mention these? Give blood and you got a full prime rib dinner with all the fixins, burgers to rival any high end restaurant, again, with everything laid out for you. No self-serve, it was all placed on your plate for you. Good times.

When I moved up here, the terminal did a big thing all week serving food, gifts, clothing and such. I never really participated in it because it was all a big open buffet type of thing. I don't relish the idea of consuming food that hundreds of people have drooled over, touched, sneezed and coughed on. I took my hats and safety swag and faded off into the distance.
