You mean like turning on the air conditioner in the middle of winter while descending a grade just so you can hold that half gear higher without touching the brakes? That kind of parasitic drag? Nope, never heard of it.
 
Western hills tend to be longer but not quite as steep. Until you get deep into the mountains. There is on hill around carbonate Colorado I think. It’s steep and long. Like 8% or better. But interstate wise they generally ain’t bad.
There is a shortcut from Helper UT to Roosevelt UT that I took in the wee hours of one winter night. I could stay in the high side (that is a range inference @the liberal ) fully loaded on any grade on an interstate. I lost 6th in the old 359 and was scared that I might miss 5th (low side @the liberal ) so went straight for 4th. I don't know how steep that was, but I swear after what seemed like an hour of climbing that rascal I finally topped out and was looking down at the stars!

Highway 14? from Greybull WY up to Burgess Jct. is 18 miles of 6% grade. When I hauled our hoe up there it was one of those trips that you eyeball your temp gauges like a boy looking at his first Playboy, and went a gear lower than you could pull it just so you didn't overheat anything. I have seen several 1 ton pickups pulling skidsteers or mini excavators up that grade that didn't make it to the top.

68 in Maryland has a 12 mile hill at about 7% maybe 6% I don’t wanna lie to ya. That’s the longest pull but it’s 50 or so miles of up and down. It takes two hours with a big load. I hate that stretch of road. The pa pike charges by weight so that’s the big load route from the Midwest to Baltimore.

That one sucks big time. It's the slow slog up that annoys me more.

I hauled my first tanker load of liquid sugar 15 inches down from the manhole with no baffles across 68 in a old cab over road commode. I sure go educated on that trip to Pepsi in Nitro West Virginia.

How many 13s have you run Hammer?

I'd guess you probably started with maybe a 6513, then 9513, 12513, 14613,.on up to current 13s
Spent my first few years with a 9513 prolly 150k. Went OTR for a couple years with a 9 speed ~300k. Came home and ran a 15x4 winch truck, then a decade in company trucks with those silly performance 9 speeds, and later Super 10s.
Put 750k on my Mack T2130 13-speed, 300k on a bucket of bolts Rockwell 10, 850k on a 16913, and have about 260k on this 18913.

So I think I'm starting to get pretty good on these 13 speeds. 😁

Put 750k on my Mack T2130 13-speed, 300k on a bucket of bolts Rockwell 10, 850k on a 16913, and have about 260k on this 18913.

So I think I'm starting to get pretty good on these 13 speeds. 😁

It's the torque rating, the generation, the number of gears. There's a letter at the end, too, the denotes the ratio set.

So the full designation would be RTLO-18913A

R - Roadranger
T - twin countershaft
L - low inertia
O - overdrive
18 - 1850 torque rating
9 - 9th generation
13 - 13 speed
A - .73 final drive ratio

If I watched my temp gauges the way I watched my first playboy, I'd spend exactly 0 seconds on the road ahead.

Since @the liberal was wanting to school us all on how they work I was hoping he would chime in and share his experience with 13 speeds.

You may want to get someone to show you what you have to do to drive with that transmission.
