Raising chickens?

Old Rooster..... Young Rooster:

Old rooster is sitting in the sun watching the hens when around the corner of the coop comes this young rooster; striding around all proud like and eyeing everything like a real estate salesman. "Who're you?" says the old rooster. "I'm your replacement pops", says the young rooster, "The farmer figures you're getting a little long in the tooth (yes I know chickens don't have teeth, now hush) and not taking care of business like you should", the young rooster says as her preens himself, "Looks like the stewpot for you old bird, so stand aside". "Now just a minute there sonny", says the older rooster and ruffles up his feathers, "It ain't just that easy see, you gotta prove yourself first". "Yeah?", says the young rooster and draws himself up, "You wanna fight me for it???" The old rooster shakes his head, "Now just don't get your beak in a knot, we'd only scare the hens and make em stop laying. No, we'll settle this like civilized birds.... we'll race for it". "Huh?", says the young rooster all surprised, "How we gonna do that?" "Easy," says the old rooster, "We'll run 4 laps around the coop here. If I win you leave. If you win I do". "You're on", says the young rooster, "Let's get at it." "Whoa now", says the old rooster,"I'm a lot older than you, so it's only fair that you give me about a 10 foot start or so". "Deal", squawks the young rooster and off they go. The old rooster does good at first but on the third lap he's slowing down. By the 4th the young rooster is right behind him. Suddenly, the old rooster starts squawking and flapping his wings. Then *BLAM* .... the young rooster is just a pile of floating feathers.

"Dagnab it", mutters the farmer, "That's the third gay rooster I've bought this month".

Moral..... Ya gotta be smart when you want to play with the young chicks. ;):biglaugh:

Well now hen house chatter
2x8 12 foot add to that 16 penny nails ever half inch or less standing up as in spike. Place around footing of hen house and anchor down with stakes. Sure cure to keep the foxes, skunks and eggs thieves out of the hen house. Dig pit and pour ash in pit from wood burning stove chicken roll in the ash to kill mites and groom themselves. Bull snakes love eggs but golf balls is a sure cure for that problem.Mouse problem simply fill small lids with coke place in runs of mouse dropping...a mouse cannot belch only blot. Old plastic refrigerate draws makes dandy nest boxes lined with wild grass for those hens. Well happy eating of those fresh eggs.

I tried raising chickens once, back in 2010.
I had to get rid of them because they kept pecking my leg when I was driving.

I caught myself a wild woodpecker once just to look it over and examine it. I tell ya Injun those things have got some long tongues on them. This one would roll out it tongue just like dough rolls around a rolling pin. I was feeding it dead flies that how I discovered how long the tongue was and how it rolled it out to eat. I finally turned it loose to go back to the wild after I learned all I could about it.

This year so far I have spotted a bunch of wild cotton tail rabbits with lil ones. Hummingbirds are thick too every color possible I think. Fast lil sweepers too when they hit the feeders. Lot of squirrels too that show up for dinner out of the feeders. Summer is hot but enjoyable so far!
