Powder Coating?

I'm thinking of Powder Coating my outside wheels on my trailer, or should I just paint them? Anyone ever do Powder Coating on the wheels if so how does it stand up?

Powder coating is a great way to finish parts that will be subject to abuse from road salts, harsh chemicals, sand and small rocks.

I had a set of wheels powder coated on a pickup I had way back when that process first came out. Long after the paint on the pickup faded and went flat, the wheels were still shiny and bright.

That stuff is tough.

Seeing that my trailer is so low to the ground the paint gets blasted off. FYI my wheels are 17".

Wheel diameter doesn't matter. You could even have the whole trailer powder coated if the place that does it has an oven large enough for it to fit into. And if you wanted to go to the trouble of removing everything from it and haul the bare frame down to them.

Oh, and try to find a place that preps the parts right there, so you don't have to bother with getting them prepped, and then haul them across town to the place that does the powder coating.

I'm just thinking of having the outside wheels coated. After I have the trailer painted I would like to have the middle of the beams coated with duraliner. The bitch is if i take all my riggings off the trailer sanford and son would take them to scrap yard for beer money.

Powder coating is a fairly simple procedure, and, there are some really trick powders available. 17" wheels might be a little too big for the kitchen oven, but, I've done some smaller stuff in an old electric oven that I can use outdoors, plugged into my welding outlet. My first attempt at this was a couple of solid engine mounts that my son and I "cooked" in our kitchen. It took a while for the fumes to dissipate, and, even longer for my wife to calm down.

It will last almost nearly forever. You have to sand-blast the stuff off if it's done right.
