Potential Health Requirement Changes for DOT Physicals

Way to easy for people with numerous, possibly even hidden diseases driving on the same highway that we are.

Witnessed a driver sweating so perfusely just moving to open his trailer doors that I thought he was going to flatline.

Wouldn't that be discrimating?....Man there would be a TON of truckers who would loose their jobs..

Yes but they way they would handle it in the DOT way is too word it so you don't understand it . Everything else driving a truck is regulated so why shouldn't someones wieght? Last i checked most companies have a dress/appearrance code of conduct.

disabilty waiting to happen..........

Won't happen if it is DOT regulated.

And these are the drivers who should be regulated in driving. Alot of them out there.

Of course i am not saying take every fat/obese driver off the road, but if a driver is not height/weight proportionate and has a medical history, either him/her or his/her family has a medical history, then yes they should be restricted to the amount of driving they can do , if any at all.

Merged this with an old story regarding the same issue. Since originally posting this as an alert for drivers to pay attention to, this has basically been pushed regularly and will soon be a reality.

Glad you said something. Thought i was going crazy(ier) and seeing things.

And what is your thought on this topic ? Besides totally agreeing with me, the way it should be.

I FULLY agree that there are people that need to be taken off the road because they are unhealthy. i personally know someone that just walking he look like hes having a heart attack, but there are people like me out there I am overweight, BUT i have LOW blood pressure, GOOD cholesterol, NORMAL blood sugar and i am NOT on ANY drugs to achieve this. I know I need to lose weight i have been working on it for 2 years and have lost 50 just this year. i dont have the money for equipment nor the space to keep it on the truck all i can do it walk and eat right. what i have heard from my company is the DOT will be wanting all drivers to lose ALL their excess weight within a year NO ONE will be able to do that not to mention they want me to weigh 150 lbs HAHA i would be a stick figure their regs are WAY off i am 6'3" tall i have an X-large bone frame they said the regs wont care about that i HAVE to be within these specs. as i said i agree people need to be helped out here but they need to look over these rules more. and yes i get sleepy driving after 8-9-10 hrs it get to ya but i sleep well and dont have any problems doing my job safely.

Do You Want To Die

This pass week I have not been on much.
Gene's brother ex-driver had a heart attack his second in 7 months.
The first one also damaged his kidneys.
Now we have been told they can't do anything, He has been released after a week. Two of those day's on life support.
The most we can expect is maybe a year but they doubt it.
It could be tomorrow we just know that life for him is day to day.
Years as a driver and abuse.....................

I noticed something yesterday and I'm sure this is the same thing as many of you.
We had to go up to the pilot it was cold and raining so I just hung around inside.
Most of the drivers I will say 8 out of 10 had trouble even walking and were overweight, And I don't mean just alittle.
I see it in Gene now put aside bad back and all the normal hurts from just driving but the way he eats and the weight gain. It's not the normal middle age spread!
Alot of these drivers looked to be in the 30's.

I think it's time everyone wakes up. The drivers life style can kill you................
And don't think you can just change it wont happen.
Bad habits is something that takes time to break.

If you don't belive me, Take a good look around you at other drivers and then look in a mirror.............

I hate to sound mean but parking in the back row as far from the entrance if at possible is very good exercise. Hell I like to walk so parking as far away from the entrance doesn't bother me at all! Again it goes back to laziness which explains the epidemic with obesity.

That depends on if you ever wake up having to "go", Then, it can be a long trip to the building. BTDT. I'm sure that's more than you wanted to know though..

If drivers would just stay away from the buffets, that would help, especially over a years time.

Well if it's #1 I just go in a pee jar or if I won't be seen go back behind the trailer and take care of business that way. If it's #2 I know when I got to go #2 I don't wait til I'm about to have brown stains all over my pants to go. Now I'm sure that was more than you wanted to know.

Parking at the back of a truck stop isn't going to provide you with anywhere near the amount of exercise you need. You need to set aside time each day to exercise either inside or outside of the truck. And before anybody makes the excuse, EVERYBODY has the time to do this.

If you are not taking the time to sit down and eat regular meals, at least don't go down the road eating sacks of grease. You can eat healthy at a Subway, you can also eat healthier at a McDonalds or Wendy's. These fast food restaurants that sell you these greasy ass burgers also have sandwiches with grilled chicken in them. You can even order a salad, sit down and eat it, and be back on the road within 30 minutes, including the 5 minutes it takes you to pull off of the fuel island and park.

And a big key is to try your hardest to sleep on a regular schedule. This won't always happen, but most of the time, you can manage this, even as an OTR driver.

Friday night the hospital released Gene's brother, Went and picked him up and took him home.
This morning we got another call he had fell and was not breathing.
We just left the hospital and he is back on breathing equipment.
We do not think he will be here with us Christmas. I know maybe this is the wrong thread but I started this on here.

So sorry to hear that Luna....I'll keep you all in my prayers....PLEASE keep us posted....

On sleep apnea. I understand the problems that it causes. But what about the drivers that dont have a regular delivery schedule? I for one do not have a regular sleep pattern. My delivery times are all over the place. Except for my Sat/Sun pick-up/delivery which is pretty close each week, my other pick-ups and deliverys are based on availability and flights being on time. How will these types of "interupted" sleep be dealt with?

I think we should be the safest ever. You all need to do like I am now. I am sitting at home. I am one of the safest drivers out there. Maybe then all these people will start wondering why the food shelves are empty some day. When we are all safe drivers and parked because of a minor deficiency, they can be hungry but physically fit and have to bust their butts at work to support us, or they can learn how to drive. Then we can see the accidents
