Own Authorities

Rubber Duck thank you very much! according to all these guys there no money to be made in the industry.. but i made almost 8000$ last month after expenses.. so i figured going fully independent i would cut out the company im leased to and put more money in my pocket :)

All I can say is get some cash together. I was lucky and had a hefty savings account when I hit the road 6 years ago. I took $15,000 cash and figured, that's way more then I need. Well, I ****ed through that pretty quick and had to go back for more. Right now I'm owed between $15,000 and $25,000 at any given time and I still have to pay for repairs, fuel and my personal bills.

You should first check on getting insurance. That's the big thing that will stop most people from going on their own. Lots of people can lease on and get insurance but can't get it on their own. They will probably make you pay it all up front and could be anywhere from $6,000 to $10,000.

Your first year plates will be the cheapest because you don't have any history so it's estimated. Maybe $1,500. You need to pay your heavy highway tax, $550.

You also need to apply for a permit for NY, KY, NM and you have to pay property tax to Arkansas even though you don't even freaking live there!!!!!!!!!!

There is money to be made. I do ok. MY buddy just started out and was having to wait at times for a check to come in because he didn't have anymore cash. Then all of a sudden a bunch came in. He immediately went out and bought an APU and other goodies for his truck. Well, he's been at home now for 3 weeks waiting for the last 2 checks to come in so he can head out because he's broke.

It's a cycle for me. I head out for maybe 4 to 5 weeks then come home. When I get home the first loads check is just coming in. If I were to go home today and sit for 5 weeks I would have $30,000 once all checks come in. That's my magic number to keep running.

What method do you use for purchasing fuel? Comdata seem popular, for the big companies, but I was wondering what fees would be added on for this service.

I use to have a Fleet Card but after a while and being jumped on by my buddy I got rid of it. Between the fees and trying to keep track of stuff it wasn't saving that much. And then, to top it off there are may small truck stops that sell fuel FAR FAR below what the other places are that accept your fuel card. Most of these small places do not. Just filling up once and saving $.40 cents per gallon can wipe out any savings you have with a fuel card.

So, I use cash and my debit card now.

These guys are giving it to you bluntly. They could have been more polite about it, but what they're saying in general is just how it is.

You CAN make more money on your own, .. but you have to play your cards right, know ahead of time what all your expenses will be, and have a lot more headaches to deal with. Tim & blackw900 have been O/O's since Ug invented the wheel, .. they're both operating under someone else's authority just cuz it works out better for them that way.

I've been soaking up information about that sort of thing for a couple years now. There aint' no way I'd consider going independent unless I had one hell of a good reliable relationship with a decent shipper. There's a guy who operates a beautiful red Pete 379 day cab with a big noisy yellow thing under the hood and an 18 speed, parks it next to my house and has three trailers. Primarily he hauls sod on his spread-axle flatbed, when there's no sod he's hauling flat steel. He also owns a grain hopper and some kind of dry bulk trailer that I rarely see him pulling. His main shipper is this commercial sod farm next door. He's home every day, ... that's the kind of deal I'd be interested in, ... but they've already got two full time independent's working for them and the only way I'd be able to get in on that is to either wait for one of them to die of old age, or under-bid them which I wouldn't do.

The only way I'd ever buy a truck is if it's engine manufacture date is older than 1-1-07, but it's not old & worn out either, ... aint' no way I'd own a truck with a DPF filter or a SCR system. And if I could buy JUST the truck, and just park it in the barn til it's paid off AND I've had time to save up 30 grand or so for operating expenses, while driving a company truck. I'm not sure if a bank would let me keep just fire/theft insurance on it and no other kind of insurance though. Yeah I'd have some problems to work out, ... I'd have to borrow ten bent rims and junk tires to park it on so the good ones don't get flat spots from sitting, .. I'd have to bobtail it up and down the backroads to keep **** oiled & I'd probably have to deal with keeping mice out of it & stuff. I don't even know what happens to diesel fuel if it sits too long, ... that's stuff I haven't even looked into yet. I posted that idea on a different forum in July of 2011 and had a bunch of ass holes jumping all over me, calling me a moron & stuff.

The last time I went through NM I had to stop and buy a permit at the POE cuz the company didn't have permits ... I think they do now though. And WTF is up with Arkansas? They want to charge you property tax, but won't even let you park & sleep on an entrance ramp? **** 'em. I'd just stay out of Arkansas.

Prepass is the way to go and have all your permits tied to it and it's green lights all the way.

Prepass is NOT the way to go if your a bad boy. It gives the scale a heads up your coming so lets get him!! If your a bad boy and no prepass your probably just going to be weighed and they won't type in your MC number.

Scales are so overrated, why bother stopping at all?

So, JGITrucking. The best advise I can give you at this point is see IF you can get insurance. You need $1,000,000 in liability and $100,000 in cargo. Cargo is the hardest to get. Also find out if they require payment in full. Try to get insurance through Northland. Many places will not accept Progressive and OOIDA. The brokers won't tell you that. They will just tell you the load is gone or something like that when they see who you have with insurance.

I found this out when a Mercer broker told me I was on the NO LOAD list. I was like WTF? I never even hauled a load for you. He said it was because I had Progressive. I had since upgraded to Northland and was taken off the list.
