Ohio bill may let more townships patrol interstates, add speed traps

One bill in the Ohio House would authorize townships around the state to allow police officers to patrol interstates. Critics fear it could increase the number of speed traps.

Ohio law allows all township police to make arrests during traffic stops on state and national highways. Townships with a population under 50,000, however, are prohibited from traffic enforcement on the state’s interstates.

Only seven of the state’s 1,308 townships have a population of more than 50,000.

The House Criminal Justice Committee held the first hearing Wednesday, May 13, on a bill to grant authority to enforce driving rules and make arrests for townships with populations between 5,000 and 50,000.

Local police would be permitted to enforce driving violations that include speeding, distracted driving, improper lane use, expired vehicle registrations, and unauthorized use of an electronic clearance device to allow a commercial vehicle to bypass a scale location.

My guess is they are claiming that companies are hacking things like PrePass, or using other people's devices to bypass the weigh stations? Looks like they are viewing us as common criminals.

I have no idea, I don’t use any electronic devices so I’m always not aware of everything that some guys use. They always think we’re criminals

I remember several years ago there was a small town within the Cleveland, OH municipal area that was famous for a speed trap. This town didn't even have an exit for their town and the interstate highway only passed through about a half mile of their city limits. Yet they constantly had a city cop hiding behind a bridge abutment writing tickets as fast as he could crank them out. I remember reading that the city derived a significant portion of their operating budget from speeding tickets.
This may have been taken to court and beaten somewhere along the way. But it went on for a long time.
