Reducing air pollution in the region is a main focus of the ground breaking event to be held at the Derrick Travel Plaza, Salisbury, NC on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 3 pm. After four and a half years of work on the part of Centralina Council of Governments funding is in place to install the first truck stop electrification project in the region.

In 2004, Centralina, on behalf of Rowan County, received a $100,000 EPA Smartway grant to begin the truck stop electrification (TSE) project. Centralina also received $400,000 in Congestion Mitigation for Air Quality (CMAQ) funding to allocate with the EPA funds to complete the project.

CabAire, LLC of Connecticut has been selected as the vendor for the project which will install towers which will service 50 trucks. Each service tower is equipped with stationary idle reduction services that allow truckers to shut off their engines and connect to HVAC, block heater power, outlets for in-cab use and Internet and cable TV access.

I doubt it will be free. I imagine the funding is just to get it in place. Hopefully it will be cheaper than the cost of running your truck though.
