Low back pain in truckers

I'm with a company looking to fix back pain with novel methods. I'm trying to get a sense of just how prevalent low back pain is in the industry.

In addition, how much medication do people usually take?

Any braces/special seats currently in use for the problem?

Any and all information is welcome and very much appreciated.

Thanks

most back pain suffered by truckers is from being bent over the table by driving managers and dispatchers. if they would quit screwing us so much, we wouldnt have these types of problems in mass.

Foreplay helps lessen the Pain too.

Seats aren't designed very well and some seats only offer one air inflation pouch for Lower Back Support, where some seats offer 3 such devices which may or not help ease such Pains.
Some Drivers know not how to sit properly thereby initiating/instigating Back Pains.

If possible, rolling up a small dry towel and placing at the base of the back helps yet not always.
Getting OUT OF THE SEAT helps tremendously.
2-4 hours Driving is enough, then a walk about is suggested.

Oh, great, someone else with a miracle cure for my low back pain.

I wish I had a dollar for every "cure" I have tried that was supposed to relieve the chronic low back pain I have lived with for over 30 years.

If I could just go back in time and not try to "be a man and handle it" and instead just been a wimp and said please help me lift this heavy whatever the hell it was that herniated 2 discs in my lumbar spine I wouldn't have daily low back pain.

If I could just go back . . . . .

Are there any therapeutic devices or seats you have tried? Would you say you are the in the majority or the minority (in terms of level of back pain)?

most lower back pain in this due to bad posture habits and lack of exercise.

Yes folks, leaning over sideways to rest against the door or shifter while going down the highway is not healthy on your back, LOL. Nor is riding around with your foot up on the dash, thinking you look cool.

Oh yeah, and that air seat isn't meant to be rode with all the air out of it.

Want "novel" methods to fix back pain? There ya go.

One of the buses I drive when I put the air in the seat sends me almost to the ceiling of the bus, and when I try to release some of the air in order to reach the pedals it puts me to the floor. The mechanic told me there was nothing wrong with the seat....lol! Of course he weighs about 300 lbs.

That's too bad Boots, there has to be adjustability, and you should be able to find the position that is just right for you. That is what the air ride seats are all about.

I remember the manually adjustable ones with a lever that would ratchet against a spring to adjust and they almost never worked and were either too stiff or on the floor.

Things have changed for sure.

Bullwinkle, you are the greatest!

I am still trying to get the company to spring for a better seat. The one I have used to be a premium seat, with six air bladders to adjust for comfort and support, but with over 753,000 miles on it and have a fat assed butt on it for the first 550,000 miles or so it needs replaced.

As far as if I am in the majority or minority, that would depend on who you ask.

For me, my back pain is the only pain.

Could you provide me the name or direct me to a supplier of truck seats?

The device is specifically aimed at correcting bad posture and putting the back in a medically proven position that puts the least amount of force on the lower lumbar area. The aim is that by "teaching" the driver better posture it will make sitting for longer periods of time easier while in addition helping strengthen core muscles that can help support the back at all times.

Just do a web search for "air ride truck seats". I know Bostrom is one manufacturer, and there are a few others that escape me at the moment.

The thing is, the higher end semi truck seat manufacturers spend huge amounts of money on research and development to provide the best, most back friendly seats.

Good luck.
