Let's Argue About Smoking in Public

Are you saying that as a customer of an establishment you should be able to do what you want?

Or are you speaking as the owner?

OH, here's a but of wisdom; stop being an inflammatory jackhole. Discuss your points as you would if I were standing in front of you, and two feet taller.

As the owner.
And I'm not immature, YOU STARTED IT!! :tongueout:

The OWNER of property ought to be 'allowed' to set his/her own rules.
If I disagree, I simply won't lend my business to that establishment.
Simple.

I'm smoking two at the moment.
One because I want it and the other just mind-**** you!!

Picture it...
one in each hand...
typing with my toes!!
:rolllaugh:

That's what I thought...

Me n an I/T headhunter shut down a boat load of parrot-heads on a cruise ship a coupla years back.
Round about daylight, as we strolled by the last parrothead, weaving back n forth on a deck chair, I says to Mark, "Look at this pathetic M/F'r!

Mark grabbed my arm and replied, "DUDE!! You can drink copious amounts of alcohol!!"

This happened after the last parrothead insisted on setting up several shooters of some **** that tasted like maple syrup to prove his point. :count:

Poor bastard. :rolleyes2:

We didn't see him again until supper time...
He still didn't look too good!!

Jump down, turn around, pick a bale of cotton!!

:toothpick:

On a county road about 30 miles from my house, there were two bars right at the state line. One on the Illinois side, RIGHT on the state line, and the other was maybe 1/4 mile into Indiana. According to the local hicks around there, both of them had been there "forever 'n' a day".

Both bars were run-of-the-mill, not too shabby, but nothing fancy.

Illinois banned smoking in public establishments. That bar was closed within a month. The one in Indiana is still open.

So when you let the customers decide "do I want to go to a non-smoking bar, or a bar that's not affected by meddling do-gooders with too much regulatory power, guess what happens?

I have not been in a bar in any state that bans smoking indoors, since those laws were passed. It's not that I'm boycotting those establishments, it's just that those establishments have become completely worthless to me because of those laws. Why the **** would I want to go to a bar and pay $2 or $3 for a beer and then have to step outside to smoke, when I can just go to the liquor store & get a 6 beers for the price of 2, and smoke while I'm drinking them?

Oh, and nothing personal @Sinister, but I don't get why some smokers who quit, suddenly become anti-smoking Nazi's. I can see it if you smoked when you were a dumb teenager & quit when you were in your 20's, and now it's been 20 or 30 years & now you're a completely different person, but geez, ... there ought to be a 10 year waiting period before you're allowed to make the transition to smoking Nazi.

I managed to quit smoking for 2 years. From 2002 to 2004 I didn't smoke a single cigarette. But during that time, I didn't bitch about anybody else smoking, even if they DID blow it in my direction.

That's what I thought...

I have no idea what that post has to do with either the original thread topic, or the derailment topic.

TN regs will let a diner label itself an "Adult Establishment" requiring the patrons to be 21 years of age to enter. There may be nothing Adult, as one would imagine, happening in said establishment, but, because of the age restriction smoking is allowed. That's a decent system, protecting children while giving the cheeseburger munchin', greasy fries eatin', smokers a comfortable place to slowly die.

I worry about all the air pollution occurring now that smokers are required to go outdoors to light 'em up.

......smokers a comfortable place to slowly die.

The day you mamma gave birth to you was the first day on the road to your death, smoking or not.
Its a vary simple concept, no one lives for ever, so why make it sound as if you smoke your gonna die when the fact is its gonna happen anyway.

True, that... I just made it sound as grim as possible for effect. However, I will argue that it is possible to enhance the quality of your life, no matter your expiration date, by not participating in known unhealthy activities and habits.

Um.......you do realize that some would say that driving these big ol' beasts would qualify as an "unhealthy activity", don't you?

I always see those electronic signs over the highway that say "X amount of traffic deaths this year".

Just sayin.

The wheel should be outlawed, in all of it's forms. Imagine how safe our lives would be, unless we were thrown from the horse, or, died of boredom.

Smoking and driving a fossil fueled vehicle.Worried about polluting the air. Or worried about polluting the air in a bar/Restaurant. Same difference.

Gather round now and sing Kumbya!

They ought not be subjected to the aroma of animal fat searing on the grill (which has been PROVEN to have ill effects on health)!!
YOU WILL NOT ORDER MEAT IN THE PROXIMITY OF MY GRANDCHILDREN YOU HEARTLESS PRICK!!

Vegetarians do not believe "meat is murder" en masse. Vegetarianism is a choice folks make. The "meat is murder" thing comes from extremists like PETA and retarded animal rights folks. I've met plenty of normal vegetarians.

Cancer is in ones DNA. You either get it or you don't . Look to those that are 90 and smoked all their lives. It is a legal product. Smoking can not be good. But. If it is so lethal then it should be banned. The government collect lots of money from the sales of Tobacco. They have banned products before. Why the hold up on tobacco. I do feel bad about smoking around kids. But, Lets not make kids a pawn in this.

I don't believe cancer is 100% DNA recordable. If it were, there'd already be a giant section of people excluded from the gov't health care scheme. We'd just let them die. I mean...if we can test your DNA and find the cancer gene...theres no sense even covering you...right?

Idiotic statement. Come on man.

But not totally untrue. There IS a gene that gives a person a propensity for alcoholism, so yeah...why NOT cancer? I'm sure there's a DNA link, but not like you say. I'm sure not ALL of those ship workers from WWII and after that now have mesothelioma (wow that hurt trying to spell) weren't DNA screwed from get go.

OK, Dinger.

Is that an insult?

Because frankly, I'm getting tired of your lack of ability to debate without calling names. We quit doing that around here about six months before I was hired as a moderator the first time. So far I've been called a "whiny little bitch", and something else...I forget...

But it sounds like YOU might oughta listen to a little Rush to get your mind right!!

That song is about how unions destroy their own industries the like the steel industry in the US did in the 70's and 80's. It has NOTHING to do with smoking in public. RUSH has a lot of lyrics that lean to the right of the political spectrum, and I like the lyrics. Not the biggest fan of the band itself though.

And...they're Canadian.

Did you know that?

And BTW;
Those who contract cancer from smoking do not consume a large share of resources for treatment.
They either respond well, or die. Post haste!!

On the other hand, lard-asses can be kept alive indefinitely!!
Maybe we ought to ban obesity.

Seriously? Smoking AND obesity don't take YEARS to kill a person? Both lead to many of the same health problems. Heart disease, high blood pressure, etc. Smoking is PROVEN to increase the risk of health problems.

Read that bolded text again. Aaaand again.

Smirk! You can talk down to me all day long, You would have to look up to me say it.

I wasn't talking to you. At all.

As the owner.
And I'm not immature, YOU STARTED IT!! :tongueout:

I never said anything about being immature. I said inflammatory. Stop calling people names. We let that go once on this forum years ago, and it chased a BUNCH of traffic away. So either debate your points without doing that, or you're gone. If anyone on the staff disagrees, please let me know.

Simple. I'm smoking two at the moment.
One because I want it and the other just mind-**** you!!

If you're in your own house, or car, I don't care. If that's a joke...practice more.

That's what I thought...

It was 430 in the morning. I went to bed.

Illinois banned smoking in public establishments. That bar was closed within a month. The one in Indiana is still open.

It takes a lot longer than a month for a bar to just close it's doors. They owed taxes...or something. Come on man...think. You know what it's affected here in Wisconsin? NOTHING. In fact...because of the fact that people can actually breathe while they drink, they end up staying longer. It's increased revenue in many places.

And people still smoke. They just do it less. OR...after a while it happens inside anyway.

I have not been in a bar in any state that bans smoking indoors, since those laws were passed. It's not that I'm boycotting those establishments, it's just that those establishments have become completely worthless to me because of those laws. The socilaization is actually increased by the people who go outside to smoke. You end up talking to people you wouldn't have otherwise.

People were probably allowed to smoke in Nazi Germany. If they were of a certain creed. Again...it doesn't apply.

And Duck, let's understand one thing: You've never offended me before, but I think you may just have. My mother is in fact a German immigrant who fled Germany at the beginning of Hitler's rise to power. She saw with her own eyes the Gurkhas heads on bayonettes being paraded through her town.

I don't believe people should be allowed to engage in behavior that puts others at risk, even years down that road when it's been proven to do so. Regulation for the better good is NOT a bad thing in this case. It's not the same as taking away guns. It's jsut not.

Do NOT call me a Nazi again. In fact, do do it at all.

It's sad that that's taken so lightly these days. Wake the **** up people.

These days, it's only unhealthy if we choose to be. We have a ten hour break and science tells us we only need 8 hours of sleep (though I'm certainly guilty of much more than 10 hour breaks...) so we have time to walk 30 minutes a day three times a week.

At this point...it's a choice.

It's just a matter of discipline to be healthy.

Someone loan me some discipline please....

I do believe that the owner, who takes the biggest risk, has a right to allow or not allow smoking in his establishment. A sign at the door announcing it as a smoking or non-smoking establishment allows the choice to enter or not. If the owners clientel is smoking or non he/she will decide to make his establishment that way. Dont believe goverment should have the right to dictate to the owner which his place should be.

That law you spoke of that all bars, ect., be non-smoking, was also passed in the state of Washington. Many bars and establishments closed their doors as they lost business due to their clientel being smokers. All these customers increased the patronage of the local Indian casinos, which was exempt from the law. Therefore bars, et c., forced to close due to government and doo gooders inserting their will over those of other citizens and owners.

I really dont mind going into a smoked filled room, as long as I chose to. I will not take my children or grandchildren, and that is my choice. I never smoke in the house, nor with my children or grandchildren present. Again my choice. I do not have to infringe on anothers legal rights in order to establish mine. Smoking is still legal, and until it is made illegal smokers should be allowed their right to smoke outside in the open air, their homes and other establishments that decide to allow it.

By the way I am a ex-smoker, over 5 years now. But, others smoking is their business not mine.

Trust me. You'd enjoy a larger turnout, and more profit, if more people can stand being in the place.

Think about that.

I just wish they would put those smoker cages away from the entrance to shippers receivers. The smoke doesn't bother me so much as the stench of the butts left behind burning and left in the rain:puke:

Trust me. You'd enjoy a larger turnout, and more profit, if more people can stand being in the place.

I have thought about it. When my clientel is mostly smokers, I would loose business. Especially when another establishment can allow smoking and I cant. Besides it was my impression, when I smoked, that most people in the bar I went to was smokers, in fact not many of the places I went to had many non- smokers. People who did not like the smoke went elsewhere and did not insist that their rights was more important then mine.

Think about it, smokers tend to congrigate as do non-smokers. Most smokers pick smoking friends and vise versa. The same tends, in my humble opinion, to be the same when picking places to hang out, eat, etc.

OK, Dinger.

Is that an insult?

That depends on whom you ask. Dinger is a guy on the OOIDA forum who says stuff like, “You listen to too much Rush Limbaugh.”

Because frankly, I'm getting tired of your lack of ability to debate without calling names. We quit doing that around here about six months before I was hired as a moderator the first time. So far I've been called a "whiny little bitch", and something else...I forget...

We have become a nation of whiny little bitches who think that our personal preferences ought to dictate the behavior of others.

Nuthin’ personal there.

You really wanna draw an attack? Tell ‘im you’re gonna wish ‘im to a cornfield on the moon.

You could end up on a diet of thin gruel.

Put that in your pipe and stare at it!

Trust me. You'd enjoy a larger turnout, and more profit, if more people can stand being in the place.

Think about that.

As a resident of Illinois I can tell you unequivocally that you're wrong. In the debates leading up to the smoking ban, supporters of the ban claimed that bar owners claiming they would lose business were wrong, because nonsmokers who had avoided smoking establishments for years would suddenly start going to the bars again.

After the ban went into place, I lost count of the number of bars in Springfield that ended up closing their doors due to lost revenue. The people who avoided bars for years because of the smoke had found other things to do and apparently didn't feel the need to start hitting the bars again. The promised increase in business never materialized.

Personally, I choose not to smoke in public establishments because it affects other people. I'm not talking about health problems from secondhand smoke, because if you try to tell me that spending two hours in a bar around smoking will actually cause health problems, I'm going to laugh at you. A lot.

Everyone has the ability to choose. If you're a nonsmoker and don't want to go to an establishment that allows smoking, by all means stay home. If you're a smoker who can't make it through a meal without firing up a Marlboro, perhaps you should stay home as well. But for either group to force their choices on the owners of the establishment is ridiculous. You don't save freedom of choice by taking that freedom away from others.
