I am considering purchasing an IPOD Touch for my travels. A fellow student was showing me some of its capabilities. It apears that it is able to connect to the wifi put out by various businesses for internet use and does not require any type of service plan or monthly fees. He has a cell phone for regular phone plan.

Does anyone know of any pros or cons to going this route I am not thinking of? This version of the IPOD I am told runs around 300 bucks...cheaper than a laptop and possible same capabilities?
 

Most business (not all) are password protecting their wireless internet accounts to prevent leaching (using their accounts). When wifi first became popular, it was easy to find internet access if you have wireless capabilities. Now, not nearly as easy, though you will still find some spots.

I would save up and buy a laptop if it were me, as I think it would be easier to use, and provide more capabilities as you need them.

Not to mention, a larger screen is easier on the eyes, and you eyes become particularly important in this career field.
 
Good points. I had heard that some fast food places are putting out wifi now? Is that not the free stuff? Do all T/S charge for net time?
 
All of your major truck stops are going to charge you to access their internet.

Some of the small independent places have it available to you.

It is becoming more popular in some restaurants and such, though not the ones you will normally be able to get to in an 18 wheeler.

I guess I am really just kind of confused with how to make this work for me. I don't care what method I end up using I want to find some affordable way to communicate with my family while on the road besides my phone...I hate talking on phone. I prefer to type and can send pictures etc. The bonus of paperwork sounds good too. I can't afford much right now and really do not want to sign up for wifi plans at half a dozen T/A's...is there an efficient affordable way to accomplish what I need?

I do have a very old laptop that my daughter has been using for kiddie games...it was free from an old job...I have no idea what capabilities it currently has. What ways could I make use of that to email etc...sorry if I sound dumb but I only have used desktops with wireless router at home...no idea how it works out there with you guys.

There isnt really ONE single STATE besides CALI I cant go to and not STOP to talk with FRIENDS... For the most part? On the WEEKENDS if im on the ROAD?

Make sure you get a laptop with wireless connectivity. There will be places you can connect. Some rest areas actually have this available.

$300-$400 might get you a new laptop at Wal-Mart. Won't be top of the line, but it will do what you are wanting.

frys.com is a place to look online, they sell new and refurbished.

You can always buy a nicer computer later on when money is a little better.

Just have a WIFI card, and able to SURF the internet at a decent rate of SPEED.. You'r all set...

Yeah I know that I will meet many people but honestly I will not remember most of them 5 minutes later. I am really horrible with remembering names and what peopel say. I am good with faces only. I don't do well with chit chat. I am terrible at socializing. I tend to only speak when I need to know something . I will probably spend most of my time listening to books on tape.
 
Also, I am going to Werner for now. I think I heard something about thier qualcom doing emails? that could be the easy answer if true.

Solid metal building surrounding us here, and only a cell phone. I have to go outside to talk until we get an antenna set up on the roof that runs wireless into the building.

I have to be really desperate to talk for me to walk outside lately, it's always cold as hell :)

If you are willing to spend that much on an iPod ... consider getting the iPhone instead.

It depends what you want to use the iPod/iPhone for. If you want to use it for tons of music and games ... then the iPod may be best. But if you also want to use it for the internet and have the cost of a cell phone ... then you may prefer the iPhone and combine the costs into one item.

Talk to an Apple store rep.

iPhone uses AT&T as its wireless provider.

Verizon has a similar internet phone: the Blackberry Storm

Have fun with whichever new "toy" you choose.

(By the way, to me, these gadgets can NOT replace my Sony Vaio laptop)
