I was going to drive for them once upon a time but they don't allow pets.I've heard they're a good company.But I sometimes wonder about the miles.I go past there terminal in Iowa City ALOT.At least every other week and I have never seen so many trucks theres.I'd ask them howcome they have so many trks sitting in the Iowa City yard.

I'm out west, and there plastering the craigs List with ad's for drivers,one of the ad's says "we got money and 300 new trucks",need drivers??Huh?, what did they do?,get some Obama stimulis free money?/ if the manure gets any deeper,I'm goin' back to shoe'in horses',better money, and I really like them tight fittin' wranglers the Lady's wear!,Woof! Dreamin' got to old to crawl around under them pony's anymore!,thats why I'm here!

They replaced the entire fleet of 9400's with new prostars to beat the 2010 emissions package. The trucks sitting are the old ones up for sale and they, like everyone, are having issues selling used equipment while demand is down!

I've been with Heartland for about a year and a half, and I'm leaving. Overall they aren't that bad, but they aren't what I was led to believe.
THE GOOD:
Pay is ontime, everytime
New equipment (mostly, they're converting all to new fleet)
You get paid the miles and reimbursements they say you do
THE BAD
No inverters allowed, PERIOD. Get caught with one = termination
No APU's on trucks, no alt heat or cooling,, must maintain less than 25% idle time
Exceed idle time, truck slows down. Over 25%= 62mph, over 40%= 59
Hometime not scheduled, you go home when they let you, for the length of time they let you. For me, it is usually a day and a half after 3-4 weeks, and I have to threaten to kill people to get that. This is why I am leaving.
Mileage is done by Household Movers Guide, not practical miles. Not even close.
Overall, they aren't bad, but the company (recruiting and orientation) says you get home 3 out of 4 weekends, which is why I signed on. Pay is good per mile, but you drive a lot more than you get paid for.
I realize I sound like a disgruntled former employee (soon hopefully) but when you go to a company for one reason and they don't hold up to their end of the promise, kinds leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Jayson, unfortunately that sounds like just about every big company out there, I read somewhere in a trade magazine that the industry trending away from inverters because of fire hazards, the inverters themselves are not the problem as much as drivers altering them and the wire harnesses tend to get frayed or the ground breaks causing electrical problems,, I have a huge one that I have had for a long time in several different trucks, I have a local guy secure it and hook it up for me. the only problem I have with it is it collects my dog's hair and dust

Well, like I said, my biggest problem is the hometime policy. I never know when I'll get to go home, or for how long. Their written policy is home 3 out of every 4 weekends, but I only get home 1 out of 3 or 4, and their definition of a weekend is a 34 hour restart. If it weren't for that one thing, I could live with the rest. Just thought I'd throw in the most frequently heard complaints from other drivers. Well, not THE most, but that one complaint would take a little while to explain.

I was slightly interested in Heartland recently when I passed one of their trucks and saw a teaser on the trailer door saying "Earn .52 a mile". ent to their website and found that to get .52cpm you gotta have hazmat and earn the safety bonus and work there like a million years first.

I have been with them since Oct.
I am regional out of Ohio and I am home 3-4 weeks a month. Normally it is only Saturday sometime till Monday morning. So I get my reset, but that is about it.
I have requested 4 days off 2 times so far and gotten it both times.
From a mileage pay standpoint they are ok, but they are not a long haul company. They specialize in Short to med length of haul. So most loads are less than 600 miles.
Doing this type of loads the use of movers guide miles hurts bad and you normally loose close to 50 miles per day, and if going around a toll you will loose more. Since we do not go on the OH or Indiana pikes at all.
The idle policy sucks. I have never had them say anything about idle to me, but I keep getting trucks that are slow and have a hard time getting them to reset the system. The last one I did, then had saved up a month of no idle, then had to swap trucks.
The one I am in now I have had for several months, and it is still at 62, and I have only idled a total of 15 hours in 2 months. It was at 28% 3 weeks ago. Do not know when it will get lower than 25%.
On the new truck thing.
They bought over 2000 new prostars in the recession. Paid cash for all. They are totally debt free as a company. They still had some prostars not out last time I was in Iowa, and several hundred 9400's waiting to sell on the yard. None of the 9400's have more than 400,000 or so. I believe all that are left are 2007 pre orders. The 2005 and 06 ones are sold, and they are selling cheap.
They have been trying hard to get drivers to recruiter. I have told them and many other drivers are starting to follow suit, to not even try and get more drivers till they fix the short mileage pay and start to pay practical miles. This should fix allot of the retention issues. And if they can retain more drivers it will be easier to higher more.

I am home almost every weekend. Actually I was home 11 weeks in a row before the 4th break.
I have been averaging 2230 miles per week paid. Even with the home time.
Staying out weekends did not seem to raise my miles, due to short loads. So I prefer to be home weekends instead of running 600 miles for the weekend.

Hey chrome dome thanks. I have been talking to heartland because I recently moved to NC and am having trouble finding anyone that will hire me so far out towards the coast. I had a job lined up before we moved but it fell through, luckily I hadn't quit my other job yet so now I'm stuck working out of Indiana for now till I find something that can get me home. They told me where I live I would only get home every other weekend and now after reading this I'm thinking that it might be once a month.

You check with wal-mart or target? they both have a number of distribution centers in N.C., Celadon has a yard(if you want to call it that) in Greensboro, they are a decent company, a number of companies run north/south in that area

None of the walmarts close are hiring right now. I haven't checked out target but I will.

Yea, if they are saying every other week it would be a system job. The pay is higher for system drivers, and they say every other week home. But most I see are getting home once a month.

Heartland is majority owned by Jerry Moyes which is the owner of SWIFT. Jerry owns 51% of heartland.

I think you need to check your facts.
He owns allot of quite a few companys like Central Ref, Central Freight, Werner, Knight, etc.
He does not own the majority of Heartland. That is still owned by the company's founder, and his son owns like 20%. The rest is in stocks. On the market. But they have bought most of those back over the past few years.
