How Veterans Affairs failed to stop a pathologist who misdiagnosed 3,000 cases

This is a prime example why, even though I’m an honorably discharged vet. I steer 100% clear of the VA and get everything done by m private doc.

but this was an isolated case. i have met up with many vets at the local barbershop and they speak well of the VA in my area.

in fact, the barber himself a WWII vet, his own personal doctor left his practice to go work at the VA.

a former podiatrist at my doctors office, left that practice to go work for the VA as well.

so in all reality, one bad apple should not stain the entire VA health care

Being a combat veteran vs. a supply cook clerk typist who just happened to be deployed makes a difference too. Or it should anyway.

But there was also another case where an 80 something year old veteran who was in a hospital with severe dementia was essentially murdered by a huge insulin shot to his abdomen.

Then the hurricane showed up and now it’s out of the news.

A friend of mine (another vet) went in to the V.A. for heart problems. Was told they would get him an appointment with a specialist.he called for an update twice a week for six months with the same reply. Went to the Er on his tricare insurance and found out he had a sever infection in his heart and sternum and had he waited much longer would probably be dead. Multiple surgeries and treatment, then six months after that was all cleared up. They called to ask him if he needed to see a specialist for something.

Another vet I know, had a stint in his heart. Went in for an MRI. They asked him to remove all metal from his person. He said he couldn’t. They refused to give him the mri. He explained it was a joke he had a heart stint. They said you need to remove it for the mri. He asked for supervisor. Talked to that person with same results. No MRI given that day.

That’s just two examples in two different states. I know four more similar stories. The V.A. is a sham.

Possibly up to 15 cases of this from that hospital. Very disturbing.

all i can say is that from watching the news, or reading the newspapers did i ever hear of such poor treatment at some VA hospitals. Vets don;t need to be treated like that. but as i had said in an earlier posting, up here, they get very good care. surprising how the VA administration knows about this stuff, but can't fix it.???

is the VA administration divided into regions, rather than as one whole unit?

like the northeast, mid-atlantic, so on and so forth??

if so, maybe that why it sucks in some areas??

Some of them are pretty fucking stupid. That’s why he asked for the supervisor explains the joke and the supervisor refused. He even asked how can I do open heart surgery on myself to remove it for the MRI. I tell ya. Many many reasons I stay away from the VA.

Yeah, it’s region then state, I am told in Omaha the care is decent but wait times at clinics are forever long. And mental health there is worthless. But you go to say San Diego, Clarksville TN, Birmingham Al, Philadelphia Pa. These are a few places that I know guys who got piss poor, extremely sub standard treatment. A lot of shit gets swept under the rug and a lot of shit goes unreported because vets just go, well that’s the way it is.

Some of the way the VA handles things was changed. Then again in the 90s things were changed again. But it is still sub-par to any civilian clinic. I’ll stick with private health care. I have to carry it on my kids anyway.

yeah, you are lucky to have your own (company) health benefits. many others sadly. do not have that option.

However I don’t know why retirees even mess with the VA when they have tricare for life and can see a doc in the private sector.
