Hello, I reside outside of Bellingham, WA. Recently acquired my CDl, with Hazmat and tanker endorsement, although I really am not interested transporting hazardous materials. Every company I have interviewed with requires some experience, which I do not have. I am in a semi-rural area, with kids and really hate to move. Any thoughts? Also looking for something that I can be home most nights. Suggestions? Thanks, Elliot

Trucking is a very sacrificial occupation, even with experience. You'll probably have to go with one of the larger training carriers for a while.

I know you don't want to hear this, but most folks get their initial experience with one of the OTR training carriers.

Only one I can think of is that milk carrier out of Lynden unless they moved. LTL? Green and white trucks, haul tanker doubles. I don't know what their hiring criteria are.

Otherwise, loggers and chippers.

Maybe go to the paper mill in B-ham if it's still going and see who's hauling in and out.

It's been so long since I lived there. I used to pick races with people and then cheat by telling them to meet me at Alabama and Yew St. Whoever got to the top of the hill first wins. Yew was the last traffic light before Lake Whatcom. My car was geared for that and had a 460 PI with a C-6 transmission from a heavy-duty pickup. Good times..

Another idea, if there's a concrete company in the area like Old Castle and the like, they use flatbeds and Class A pumpers. And construction companies with big eauipment..

Lumber yard and equipment rental companies have some Class A drivers too.

Every company I have interviewed with requires some experience,

For sure.

Try small fleets. That's how I got in. Started driving straight trucks with them. Learnt that to upgrade my B to an A all I had to do was to go to DMV and pass a 20 ? .

After that another employee started ""learning" me how to drive tractor on weekends. Then we hooked up and he learnt me with the trailer.

Renewed my permit and I was allowed to learn myself in the tractor and trailer alone for another 6 months.

Found a third party testor that charged $50 each for backing, road test and pretrip or a buck 50 for the kit-n-kabudle.

After I passed went out with trainee a few days on actual runs. And was on my own after that.

Ohh; did I mention I'm home evry nite.

Most companies I know won't give you a training and it sucks if you are interested in this job.

Lumber yards like Meeks will often hire new drivers for their delivery trucks.

Truck driver for delivering dairy products pulling a 53' refrigerated trailer.
Driving Schedule: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, from 3:30 am to Early afternoon. Tuesday and Thursdays off. Willing to cover other routes during vacations.
Requirements: Class A CDL, good driving record, and medical card. Driver must know how to run an electric power jack and forklift. Must be able to pick and load your own truck on the weekends; must be able to lift 45 lbs.
