Get out and exercise at rest stops?

Is an OTR driver allowed to travel any amount of distance from their loaded or unloaded truck? Obviously going into a rest stop diner is fine, but are there any distance or time limits?

I was wondering about carrying a (street legal) scooter in the cab, and taking a ride to town/park/etc for a few hours during my rest days, or long rest periods, or layovers, etc.
 

I suppose it would be fine to carry a scooter on the truck. Getting it inside the cab might be extremely difficult.

Some people do carry bikes strapped behind the cab.

Me personally, I just walked whenever possible, and always stretched when I stopped for my breaks. You can go as far from your truck as you like, providing the company doesn't have any specific policies against it.
 
The distance between a driver (whether company or O/O) and his rig should always be based upon your status of readiness. If you are under load...besides ensuring your rig is secured before leaving it unattended...the distance you travel will always be based upon your log and time management. If empty...the distance should be based upon your scheduled return to duty status.

Company drivers should always educate themselves with their company's policies...this is a given. But do understand there is no law referencing how much distance must remain between a driver and his rig. It is a responsibility a driver takes on regarding his business or job.

After looking a little more, a scooter could be a tad difficult. The lightest ones weigh 70 pounds, and ones with any distance are more like 200 pounds. Unless they could somehow go behind the cab, there's no way they fit inside.

Bikes though can come with add-on 4-stroke engines, enough for a 25mph 70 mile range on 1.5 liters. So if the destination is a long distance away, your legs only have to do as much exercise as you want. They also come with folding options so they could fit in the cab to keep them clean and safe.
 
We've managed to take a 34 hour restart at our home town. So we park at the truck stop and go home. As long as we aren't under a high dollar load ... and get back to our truck by our PTA time ... we go as far as we like.

We broke down once and Freightliner was closed for the weekend. We were 20 miles from my sister in another state ... so we spent the weekend with her family. That was nice.

We've walked to shopping centers, malls, and movie theaters that were nearby.

There are drivers who are interested in getting out and exploring the country in between loads.

And there are drivers who are interested in getting in shape (or staying in shape).
