FMCSA ends the requirement for traffic violation lists

Truck drivers will no longer have to provide employers with a list each year of their traffic violations, a federal rule change that drew overwhelming support from drivers and carriers.

“This requirement is largely duplicative of a separate rule that requires each motor carrier to make an annual inquiry to obtain the motor vehicle record (MVR) for each driver it employs from every state in which the driver holds or has held a CMV [commercial motor vehicle] operator’s license or permit in the past year,” the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration stated in its final rule, scheduled to be published on Wednesday.

Because drivers will no longer spend time completing a list of convictions for traffic violations — and carriers will no longer have to file them — FMCSA estimated that the new rule will save drivers and carriers $24.9 million over 10 years (discounted for inflation), with annual savings estimated at $3.5 million.

Not calling it false, but hard to believe that there was that much cost involved in one piece of paper, filled out by the driver, and stuck in a file.

Glad we don't have to do them anymore, since I wasn't doing them for myself anyway, LOL

Well, the driver has to be given the form.

He has to complete and return.

Employer has to review and file. Request a copy of the record anyway.

Insurance is given a copy and reviews it’s records…

Bullshit adds up over time as 6-8 hands look at and are involved in its final processing.

My insurance company has never asked for a violation and review form. That, and I would imagine most, if not all, large carriers all do this online.

12 years ago I extracted my signature from a passenger authorization form and saved that as a transparent background layer in a Photoshop PSD file.

Friday they sent me a PDF of the MVR form with instructions to print it, sign it, scan it and email it back.

Like I've done every year since 2010, I opened the PDF in Photoshop, dragged my signature in from the other file, set it in the right spot, typed Friday's date onto it, saved it as a JPG and emailed it back.

It took me all of about 3 minutes.

But it's good to know that I won't have to do that again next year. It'll save me SO much time.
