FedEx National LTL, a long-haul trucking unit based at 1144 W. Griffin Road, will close by Jan. 30 as officials combine operations with FedEx's Freight division. The National LTL (less-than-truckload) office employs about 175 people, some of whom may get to transfer elsewhere within the FedEx organization, said spokeswoman Ann Saccomano.
Altogether, the consolidation will result in the closing of approximately 100 FedEx facilities and layoffs of an estimated 1,700 employees.
FedEx's downtown Lakeland office at 333 E. Lemon St. will not be affected by the consolidation, Saccomano said. The facility provides information technology and other support services and employs an estimated 400 workers.
Saccomano noted the recession's continued impact on businesses and the resulting downturn in demand for shipping services.
