engine rebuild question

this link shows Fitzgerald Machine shop rebuilding a 12.7 Detroit.. At one point the mechanic is pushing the liners down and using some kind of tool to press them down on shims and measure how much they stick up above the deck.
questions.................
how high above the deck do they stick up in thousands of an inch??
what is this tool called that he is using..????
Are the liners held in only by downward pressure or are they bolted down???
I have heard that a full set of rebuild parts including liners and pistons and machined cam is about 3500$.
Is that true???because if it is the profit on a 15K rebuild is about 10K.....does that sound like a rip off or what???

After the liners are installed there is usually a company who specializes in shimming or grinding down. They are usually a mobile unit. I've seen them do it a few times at the shop where I park my truck.

Its setting the piston liner protrusion.
All the liners must be at a given height and be vary close in that height to one another in order for the head gasket to seal.
If one is to low the head gasket will blow within a few thousand miles, to high and it wont seal at all.
CAT piston packs are around $600.00. On a $15K rebuild your getting far more than just new pistons and liners. At that price it should include a new or reman head also.

getting back to the subject..Again.... if anyone knows about the tools involved and typical shop charges for setting the liners.pm me.
There is no video online ...I would think with a trillion web pages there would be...
Also it looks like on the 12.7 the cam sits off to the side.....that would make it easy to install but how does it turn the valve train???

Are you talking about the dial indicator or the assembly on to of the liner? Also the cam uses "rockers" to push two valves at the time and its moved by the gears in the front of the engine... i think:(
