Does a pickup w/trailer need DOT numbers?

Duck

Sarcastic remark goes here
Something like a one ton dually pulling a tandem axle 20 foot car trailer, owned by a manufacturing company, hauling it's own product to customers across state lines.

Currently the owner of the company is looking into this question because he's getting tired of crappy service from LTL carriers.

Anyone know if he'd have to have an operating authority, DOT numbers, ELDs, drug testing, the whole kitten caboodle?

Currently they deliver locally in Illinois using a Chevy 4500 but they want to run to Arkansas, KCMO & Detroilet.

If you are crossing state lines, you are bound under Federal laws and regulations by the Interstate Commerce Commission.

What vehicles are considered as dot?
the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle is a key factor that determines whether or not it is a DOT vehicle. As the FMCSA points out, a vehicle must be registered as a commercial vehicle if it has a GVWR of or over 10,001 pounds.

A pickup truck does not need a DOT number if its GVWR is fewer than 10,000 lbs. But the truck would be subject to the FMCSA rules if is pulling a trailer and the combined weight exceeds 10,000 lbs.Jun 19, 2023
