Delaware nears snow and ice removal mandate

In Delaware, the House Transportation/Land Use and Infrastructure Committee agreed to advance a bill to set fines of $25 to $75 for failure to remove snow or ice. Incidents that cause property damage or physical injury would result in penalties of $200 and $1,000 for motorists. Truck drivers would face fines of $500 to $1,500.

SB58 would limit citations to affected vehicles to one per 24-hour period. Drivers would be exempt for accumulations while the vehicle is in operation.

The bill’s next stop is the House floor. If approved there without changes, SB58 would move to the governor’s desk. Senate lawmakers already approved it by unanimous consent.

That ones easy to get around but I see your point.

How ARE you supposed to clean it off? Wonder if they’ll go after flatbeds, too?

Some warehouses have snow blades but they always push their plowed snow in front of them, so you can't use them anyway.

But yeah you gotta love that they're quick to punish but they're not interested in actually solving it. They want the money, not the safety.

Luckily, my trailer doesn't sit anywhere for too long, and if a big snow does happen to hit it, it will blow off quickly rather than form blocks of ice.

My tarps are so dirty and salty already by the time the snow flies that it has to be cold as fuck and coming down hard and fast for snow to accumulate. I work for TMC. I don’t pull a whole lot of loads that aren’t tarped to begin with. But I have a shovel under the bunk so if it happens to snow it’s ass off and drops to -5. I can shovel off enough for them to leave me alone. I also use it to dig myself out when I get plowed in, in a parking lot.

Picked up a loaded drop 'n hook trailer in Easton ME a few winters ago that was bound for Bethlehem PA. There was a bunch of snow and ice on the roof - probably sat in the empty yard through a few storms, plus a recent humdinger of a storm...

Got down to Houlton, an' I'm about 3000 lbs over gross. They usually scaled at 79,000 plus change, and the shipper very rarely went over on these loads, so its all snow and ice.



Maine wasn't a problem, but all those other loser states along I95 have those gotcha laws...



Connecticut is about the only one that has open scales, so that ain't a big deal... truck wash down at the Kittery has a snow removal service, so I PAY to get it off. No big deal, since the carrier reimburses for stuff done to the trailer. Between their blade, and a lot of hot water, there's still a lot of ice up there that isn't coming off. Its froze solid to the roof...



So, by Boston its gone from below zero (not fake Canada temperature! ) to the fourties, and every time I look back there, I have a whole rainstorm of melt water coming off the roof. Jerk four wheelers up that way all tailgate, so on a dry day with the sun out, they're all back there with their wipers going furiously. I'm wondering when one of them is going to rat me out because they can with these stupid laws. Then there's the rough roads in especially NY, NJ and PA that might shake a chunk off...

Got down to PA, and dropped the trailer... there was still ice melting off it, and this is a day and a half after I hooked it!
