Trucking company Con-way Inc. said it recorded a fourth-quarter loss amid a recession that has curbed demand for freight services.
The San Mateo company said net loss in the quarter ended December 2008 was $43 million, or 94 cents per share, versus a profit of $34.5 million, or 73 cents per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter.
Both periods included special charges. Excluding those charges, Con-way said it would have earned $4.5 million, or 10 cents per share, in the most recent quarter.
For the full-year 2008, Con-way reported net income of $58.6 million, or $1.23 per diluted share, compared with $146.8 million, or $3.06 per diluted share in 2007.
