Several years back, it was probably about 7:00 to 8:00 PM, me and another one of our trucks that had 2 drivers in it were on our way to the west coast. We had not planned on stopping at the truck stop on the south side of I-10 after you pass Lordsburg, NM. I ought to remember the name of the truck stop, but it slips my mind at the moment, I have not been out that way since the 80's.
As we were slowing down a real pretty shiny red Pete, probably a 250 inch wheelbase, passed by us and said, "You 2 come on, you don't have time for a truck stop." I talked to him just a bit while crossing the over pass going to the truck stop them there was no reply. We stayed there probably over an hour. We found out why he did not reply that last time, his truck was in the median, turned over and burnt. Yes, he was trapped in the truck. We stopped and they told me the truck burst into flames almost instantly when it turned over. Said it looked as if he went to sleep and just drove off of I-10 and when it turned over it burst into flames before it ever come to a stop. I told them I did not think he went to sleep, that I was talking to him on the CB as I was going over the over pass headed to the truck stop about an hour or more ago and he had failed to reply to me, that had to been at the time the wreck took place, something had to have happened to cause this. At 1st they didn't quite believe my story.
Needless to say neither one of us could believe our believe our eyes seeing that pretty red Pete on its top completely charred with smoke still coming from it with the driver still in it. I have often wondered if we had not stopped could things have been different. But in situations like that you never know.
