Biscuits and gravy..??

Have any of you ever made your own gravy and biscuits..??

I tried that this morning. the recipe for the gravy i got online, and it did not include the drippings from the sausages.

I used the sausages you get at the market, you know, those pre-cooked ones that are frozen??

I cooked those then chopped them up.

the biscuits were the ones "in a can".

the gravy came out (to me) great, real thick like i remember it to be. I got some "left over" for monday morning.

god i was so dying for a biscuits and gravy breakfast. the truck stop i fuel up at has a 24 hour restaurant, but i only have time to fuel and grab a coffee, as my trailer needs to be back ASAP. so no truck stop biscuits and gravy for me.

I make my own all the time, but not on the road. It's best to use mild sausage, and I always toss in a tablespoon or so of bacon grease along with the sausage. When you mix the flour in, allow it to cook and brown for a bit so you don't end up with gravy that tastes like flour. I've also been known to crumble good crispy bacon into the gravy for a little added kick.

Canned biscuits are ok, but homemade are better. Use butter-flavor Crisco when you make them and you'll really enjoy the results.

I don't have any measurements or cooking times because I learned from my grandmother in Georgia and there were no measuring cups or timers. You just do it by feel. :)

that too is how my grandma and mother cook. all by "a little this, a little that".

i do have a biscuit mix, but i went with the canned ones instead. I was looking at he cholesterol content by adding any grease drippings. but from what you say, it doesn't seem to be too much, as at least, compared to the recipes i found online.

thanks.

I make my gravy without any kind of meat. Just brown the flour in canola oil or coconut oil, add the milk and cook until thick. My biscuits aren't near as good as my moms, but I'm working on it. If I'm in a hurry, I sometimes use biscuits that I get from the store in the frozen food section. They are extra large and come in a plastic bag (can't think of the name). They are way better than the canned biscuits.

There's something fundamentally wrong (for me personally) with gravy that has no meat in it.

And no matter what you do, how you do it, or how many times your Mom shows you, you can never cook as well as her. It's a law of nature. :)

For those of you with concerns about cholesterol, I'll post an article I found a little later - the site I found it on is down right now.
It's very eye-opening and in short, this Dr. has cut open over 5,000 arteries and concludes that almost everything you've heard in the lasat 25 years or so is completely wrong.
There's a REASON you have cholesterol (lubrication) and real butter and olive oil is a lot better for you than all the low fat foods and drugs they try to sell you....................

Our bodies produce a certain amount of cholesterol. It makes up the myelan sheath that coats our nerve cells, allowing a smooth path for nerve impulses. Only problem is some folks either make to much cholesterol or over supplement with diet.

I always use real butter and olive oil or canola oil. Coconut oil is good too.

i hadn't seen any such "bag-o-biscuits", but i will try harder next time maybe at the club membership place i go to, they seem to have things most stores don't. as for the gravy..?? canola oil..?? really..?? the 2 recipes i got online specified butter. i can always give the oil a try as well. how much oil do you use..?? (the recipes for the butter say, 4 table spoons, or 1 stick)

and for anyone's information, nothing is as good as anyone's mom can do. this is one of the many reasons why we miss them when they leave this earth.

thanks again for your way of making the gravy, i will try it that way in the future.

My wife makes a really good gravy with no meat to start, but u can always add bacon bits or sausage bits as desired.
Start with canola, olive, or coconut oil (or bacon or sausage grease), add in some salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of flour. cook that till it is browned and thick then add in a little milk to smooth it out. YUMMY. U can add in your bacon or sausage bits as desired at that point (I always do) Gotta have my meat! Then just spread over biscuits of choice. Enjoy.:toothpick:

As promised.
I will note that he is greatly critisized by the medical community and even lost his license (I think). Considering how hard that is to do for the offenses I've seen, I suspect the greatest offense of all is intefering with drug dealers.............

The amount of oil depends on the amount of flour and the amount of milk. Its a touchy feely kinda thing.
