5th wheel failed to lock up this week....

When was the last time you inspected your 5th wheel to be fully OPEN before hooking up?
Always!

An old habit of checking 5th wheel grease before hooking... Always eyeballed the latch too. Carried over when I started running plates, a quick glance to make jaws were open and not dry.

Don't imagine that's a common practice with today's drop n hook trained monkeys.

I love it when drivers act like they're perfect.

It's one of many things that makes this industry irritating.

I actually didn't see your post when I responded to mndriver's post. (Half asleep, on mobile.) Sorry if it stepped on your toes. It's not about perfection, either, it's about good habits learned from seeing all kinds of crap happen, it's about making sure Mr. Murphy has to work harder to bite you on the backside.

And since you bring it up, the most irritating part of this industry, by far, is the rampant IDGAF attitude.

Well I'm a drop & hook monkey so....

Ooo oo eee aa aa.

(Google translate: Apology accepted)

😂

But yeah sorry on my part too. I was pissed earlier because of some issues here at work.

I only drop my trailer at the end of a run and then go park bobtail. Next load, I do a pretrip on the tractor before hooking to the trailer. Fifth wheel, being part of the tractor, gets looked at as well.

I checked the fifth wheel before and after. After I hooked I grabbed my flashlight and went under for a visual.

Whenever I left my truck and it was out of my sight I checked with a flash light. I would glance at the handle but I always wanted to see it hooked with my eyes. I was the one that would have had to pay the bill if I dropped the trailer. That was my motivation.
