Washing fruit is about getting all the poison off. They spray everything with insecticides these days.
Like most things insecticides have a shelf life once sprayed.

They don't....But as @DubbleD said, "A little dirt never hurt anyone."
I was raised on a small farm and when we were kids, we used to eat all kinds of fruit from our orchard that wasn't washed, straight off the trees and out of the bins that the pickers put them in....Probably pretty filthy.
We rarely got sick as kids and I very rarely get sick as an adult.
People these days disinfect everything in their homes to such a ridiculous degree that they don't let their kids develop "immunities" to anything and then they wonder why the kids are always getting sick.
Its fairly simple as far as I can see....When the kid goes out into the real world where people are a bunch of trucking slobs that never wash their hands after using the restroom and then grab the door handles that the kid then grabs later....The poor little bastard with the underdeveloped immune system gets sick!
That's just my .02
Unless marked as 'Certified Organic' any fruits or veggies bought at a grocery store, big box chain etc. have been treated with Pesticides, Herbicides, Larvacides, Fungicides...
Thats a great point, and you are absolutely right. Unless you grow it yourself you don't know what you are getting. Even if they are "Organic" there is no guarantee that the soil isn't being over used for the sake of production. Our bodies need more minerals than the typical "NPK" fertilizers used to grow production crops. That is why even for "Healthy Eaters" quality supplements are so important.Actually, from what I have read, the Certified Organic label doesn't always mean it is free of chemicals since government standards allow a certain amount and still be called organic. There are many small farmers who grow purely organic food but it is not labeled as such because of the time and expense of getting certification. It is really hard to know exactly what is in our food unless we grow it ourselves or know and trust the person who grew it
