One of the advantages of owning your truck is that you control what gets fixed, where it's done, and how it's done. I don't think anyone wants to spend more than they have to, but scrimping on maintenance can lead to more expensive repairs in shops away from your base and roadside breakdown.
As with any used vehicle, the problems that exist at the time of sale that are not immediately visible become your problems once you've driven off the lot. Anyone who buys a truck should be prepared to sink a bunch of money into it.
