YRC Worldwide chairman Bill Zollars apologized to the company’s Teamsters employees, saying the trucking giant’s nonunion workers will take as much or more in salary cuts as the union workforce.
Zollars’ recent comments that YRC’s nonunion workforce probably won’t take further compensation cuts angered many union workers, who are being asked to take an additional 5 percent pay cut after accepting a 10 percent reduction earlier this year. In addition, YRC wants to suspend monthly payments into Teamsters pension funds through the end of 2010.
“YRCW is committed to the principle of ‘shared sacrifice’ and will require that our nonunion employees take as much, if not more, cuts in wages and benefits as provided by our union employees in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which has been submitted for membership ratification,” Zollars wrote Tuesday in a letter to Teamsters President Jim Hoffa. “The companies’ financial books and records will be made available as required… to verify that nonunion employees have provided equal sacrifice.”
