Wireless Video System Puts Long-Haul Trucking Firms in Driver’s Seat

San Diego-based DriveCam Inc., a company that mitigates driver risk, said it is now able to serve the long-haul trucking market thanks to an advance in the company’s technology.

The device consists of a small camera mounted on the windshield behind the rearview mirror, which sends images via a cellular network to DriveCam’s analysis center.

Fleet managers can go to a Web site to access videos and reports on their drivers.

The firm’s cellular-capable video event recorder, developed with Sierra Wireless, captures risky driving behaviors and sends the files to company analysts for review.

The camera senses possible signs of dangerous or careless driving — a hard brake or a swerve, for example, which causes the system to begin recording.

The company was launched in 1998 and completed a second round of financing in 2005, raising $18 million with the help of Menlo Ventures.
