OMAHA, Neb. — The founder of Werner Enterprises is planning to step down from his chairman position this spring, so the trucking and logistics firm will reshuffle its executive team.

The Omaha-based company said Friday that 73-year-old Clarence L. Werner will step down in May after Werner's annual meeting.

Werner, who owns more than 30 percent of the company's stock, will become chairman emeritus. He began in 1956 as a one-man trucking operation.

Fifty-three-year-old Gary Werner will move up from vice chairman to chairman.

Fifty-one-year-old Greg Werner will become vice chairman and continue as chief executive.

Forty-one-year-old Derek Leathers will become president and continue to serve as chief operating officer.

“Gary, Greg, Derek and I have worked closely together in successfully growing Werner Enterprises for many years. I am extremely confident in their abilities and the abilities of our entire Werner team,” said C.L. Werner. “Our company and management team is very well positioned with a rock solid foundation, and they are prepared to take Werner Enterprises to much higher levels and improved performance in the years to come. My health is excellent, and I intend to stay involved as a member of the company’s board of directors.”
