A Virginia state lawmaker wants to require smartphone manufacturers to include a way to disable them when lost or stolen.

Delegate Lionell Spruill Sr., D-Chesapeake, has prefiled a bill for consideration during the upcoming regular session, which would require manufacturers to either install a kill switch in all new smartphones sold in the state or add the capability of downloading a shutoff switch at no extra cost. Manufacturers must meet the requirement by summer.

Actually, this is a great idea, handled on the right level.

The kill option would stop some of the identity theft and it's being handled on the STATE, rather than federal level.

Nope.

It's a cover story. They just want to be able to shut down phones in a Ferguson type situation so people can't shoot video of police brutality.

Government don't give a damn about protecting your identity. They are just terrified of accountability.

preach it, tinfoil hat man! :grandpa:

I don't like Governments mandating anything. It should just be an option on the phone available if one would like to have that option on their phone.

@Duck makes a great point about the ability for others to shut that phone down even though they did not pay for the phone or pay to keep it active.
