ELWOOD -- Central States Trucking said Wednesday that it plans to open a satellite operation this year near the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe -- Logistics Park Chicago.

The Bensenville-based company said it has acquired 20 acres of land near the logistics park located in Elwood.

Doug Grane, president of Central States Trucking, said in a statement announcing the plan that the new facility "will allow us to better serve our customers in a more efficient manner. With this satellite location, Central States pro-actively embraces the opportunity to improve upon our delivery of world-class intermodal service in the marketplace."

Central States Trucking is a family-owned business with 300 employees and operations in six Midwestern states.

The new operation in Elwood would be used to move customers' cargo directly from trains to the company trucks to improve the efficiency of delivery, the company said.

The BNSF logistics park is a transfer point for cargo containers coming into the area from the West Coast. Cargo containers are transferred directly from trains to trucks.

The company did not detail a timetable for construction but said it expects to open the satellite facility this year.

Central States Trucking would hire a small staff to operate the facility and about 10 to 15 drivers.

The BNSF logistics park is next to the CenterPoint Intermodal Facility, which is being developed by CenterPoint Properties in Oak Brook. CenterPoint is developing a similar project in Crete.
