Even though you navigate the highways, truckers can help keep our nation's ocean and inland ports safe by alerting America's Waterway Watch to suspicious activity.

Call AWW, a joint effort of the U.S. Coast Guard, Reserve and Auxiliary, at show contact info or 1-877-24WATCH (249-2824). Report an immediate danger to life or property to 911.

Suspicious activity is described as ``a pattern of behavior that arouses a `gut feeling' that something is not right,'' according to the Coast Guard. Remember though, ``People are not suspicious. Behavior is!''

SURVEILLANCE EFFORTS, such as photographing or mapping potential targets.

ELICITATION, such as strangers asking detailed questions.

TESTS OF SECURITY, such as abandoned packages, small fires and bomb threats.

SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR, such as activity that is out of place or out of character.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, chartered by Congress in 1939, is the all-volunteer branch of the U.S. Coast Guard, promoting water safety and providing emergency services. Visit cgaux.org for more information.
