State tries to head off spread of I-40 clogs
If nothing is done to improve traffic flow on Interstate 40, the highway could be congested all the way from Dickson to Mt. Juliet within four years.
I-40 through downtown Nashville is congested enough to be considered failing, and the clogs will spread further into the suburbs as Nashville's bedroom communities continue to grow.
Officials living along I-40 in Williamson, Wilson and Dickson counties want alternatives for their commuting residents.
Tennessee Department of Transportation officials agree it's time to decide how I-40 can meet the needs of motorists along the burgeoning route.
The department has launched an 18-month study examining major problems and possible solutions for drivers from Interstate 81 in Bristol to I-40 in Memphis. The plan will focus on improving the capacity of I-40 and alternate roads, addressing heavy truck traffic and increasing carpooling or public transportation along the route, TDOT long-range planning director Jeanne Stevens said. continues............
