The national recession has hit home for two major trucking companies in Fort Dodge.
Smithway Motor Xpress Inc. has been forced to lay off workers and cut wages, according to Douglas Sandvig, the company's president and chief executive officer.
Decker Truck Line Inc. has also made some changes, although company officials aren't revealing any details.
''We just made a few minor adjustments to deal with the economic situation,'' said Tammy O'Tool, executive administrative assistant to company President Don Decker.


Smithway
Hauling wallboard and other construction supplies on flatbed trucks is a major part of Smithway's business. A little more than two years ago, the number of construction projects started dropping as the economy tilted toward recession. With less building going on, there's less material for Smithway's blue trucks to move.
Sandvig said the company noticed its building supplies business begin to drop in the summer of 2006.
''We've been struggling with this for longer than most people realized that there's been a problem with the economy,'' he said.
