Senator wants bus safety ‘letter grades’

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer on Sunday asked the federal government to post letter grades for discount tour bus companies so consumers will be able to easily see the companies’ safety records.

The measure is prompted by a string of deadly bus crashes since a March crash left 15 dead in the Bronx. Since then, New York has sidelined hundreds of buses and bus drivers in a stepped-up program to stop buses for safety evaluations. Many drivers were found to have had multiple driver’s licenses with histories of violations.

This facet of the transportation industry should be regulated above and beyond all other forms of transportation. Safety is essential when carrying live loads of people.
In the limousine/car service and taxi industry, the HOS are not regulated enough. These drivers are allowed to work 16 hour days. Often times a run will exceed that allotted time frame and that is allowed because they are carrying passengers and getting them to their destination is seemingly more important than their safety.
If a driver says they are sick or too tired, once their shift has started, then their position can be threatened by the dispatch or driver mangers.
Many times, the driver will just push on because they are more concerned with job security than the safety of the situation.
These drivers are either contract drivers or company drivers. The contract drivers are pushed harder to perform under these circumstances.
Afterall, for every driver with a headache, there is another with an aspirin in their pocket that will take their job leaving room for abuse, errors and misconduct in the industry.
