CANONSBURG, Pa. — A Florida truck driver faces a hearing before Washington County District Judge David Mark Wednesday after spending several days in the Washington County jail after he drove his 59,346-pound big rig onto a road with a 10-ton weight limit.

He was pulled over Saturday by Canonsburg police Officer Scott Bashioum, who is also a commercial vehicle enforcement officer, when Bashioum spotted the Florida driver, 58-year-old M. Amareles-Amaneles of Hialeah, Florida, making a left turn from Strabane Avenue onto West Pike Street, reportedly nearly hitting a vehicle stopped at the light, according to an article by Kathie Warko in the Washington Observer-Reporter.

Bashioum told the newspaper that the truck driver started to make a right turn onto Bluff Street, but the officer put on his cruiser’s emergency lights and siren and stopped the rig.

Wait...you mean that 10T is for the whole combination and not just each wheel??

Amareles-Amareles was jailed because neither he nor his company could come up with the $10,000 collateral toward his $17,386.50 fine for driving an overweight truck on a road posted with a 10-ton weight limit

Ouch!

Michigan is famous for this around the Detroit area. We had one of our guys get nailed with ~$30K in fines. Over on the steer, drive, tandem, gross. They reduced it to about ~$6K, IIRC.

And the cops are wrong... a brain would have kept him out of jail.

a better gps? really, I have a better gps and you know how many times it wants or tries to take me down roads obviously one isn't suppose too? How about grab a map, and make a phone call...

this driver a complete idiot....but this is what the cdl mills are putting out there great job

Penn. Needs to up grade their damned roads! So many roads are off limits to 102 wide and BLah,Blah.

I do realize this driver was in a residential area and that is wrong. But $17,000.oo in fines? Come on now, Let's get real.
Maybe $1,000.00 fine and a police escort out of there, Provided no structural damage was done would be more in line with reality.

What makes you think he came out of a CDL mill? It's far more likely he got his CDL on his own so he could drive a one-truck operation, which is what this is.

1st: lacking common sense
2nd: and guessing, probably got his cdl, went through a training program of some sort, then hooked up with a buddy after training? (it's too hard insurance wise for someone to get his/her own truck and start running it needed training somewhere).
3) bought a 60 dollar gps, ok, seems to me not making enough to buy the more expensive ones. (bfc?)

idk, all speculation, but can't be too far off base...

It's a shoestring budget fly-by-night, probably one of the outfits guilty of underbidding everybody and keeping rates in the sewer. He couldn't afford the big GPS because he doesn't make enough. His company didn't have enough running capital to get the truck out of impound.

My thought is he didn't have any training at all, not even the small benefit offered by a CDL mill. Guys like this can't afford CDL mills.

17k in fines is ridiculous.

That kind of abuse of power is why God gave us armor-piercing bullets.

You should have seen the fine we got in PA for a guy bringing a 221,000# tower section across a bridge he WAS ROUTED on, while under trooper escort.

Pretty sure they boss hired a lawyer for that one.

PA is bullshit.

How the heck does that work?!? The DOT call the escort on the radio to stop you? :confused-96:

Wasn't me, and I don't know the details. All I know is that all activity on that route stopped for two weeks while we got new route surveys, etc.

I would love to have been in the court that day.

In this day & age, a good lawyer can get this guy off the hook by claiming it's not his fault because the restrictions were only written in English.

Believe it. Up home in Canada we had a lawyer from Quebec that went all over the country purposely breaking laws and going to court arguing that he didn't have to obey them because they were not written in French. Went all the way to the Supreme Court where they agreed with him. All laws on the books from waaaay back had to be re-written in French also. Cost in the Billions.

Note: This did not apply to Quebec, where laws are all French only, court is French only, etc, etc.

Yup, buddy of mine at Keen missed a turn and called the locals for some assistance and got hit with a fine in the $10,000
range (don't remember the exact number).

Keen went to court got it reduced to next to nothing.

You have "buddies"?

yep his name is bubba, you didn't read his first posting did you...lmao...
