The fourth annual OOIDA Truckers for Troops campaign surpassed set yet another record raising more than $71,000 going toward care packages for military personnel stationed in combat areas overseas.

“Our members have really come through this year, and we couldn’t be more amazed at their generosity,” says Norita Taylor, media spokesperson for the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

The campaign, which launched on Dec. 6 and ran through Dec. 10, included a weeklong radio effort broadcast on OOIDA’s Sirius XM show Land Line Now.

The project got an early boost with a generous donation from Shell Rotella for $5,000. During the week weeklong campaign truckers were able to join OOIDA or renew their membership for $25, with 10 percent of that money going toward care packages for U.S. troops stationed in combat areas overseas. OOIDA matched the 10 percent dollar-for-dollar.

The combined effort raised a total of $71,261.84 – all of which will go toward the care packages for troops.

OOIDA members and supporters have contributed to nearly $230,000 over the course of the four Truckers for Troops campaigns.

“But we would still like more cards and letters to include in the packages since it’s a great way to show support, and our recipients tell us it’s one of the most popular things we send,” said Taylor.

Cards and letters can be sent until Jan. 7, 2011.

Send to OOIDA headquarters, attention to: Truckers for Troops, P.O. Box 1000, Grain Valley, MO 64029. Individual envelopes are not necessary. Towns or school names can be included, but please do not include last names or other personal information. For more information, call 816-229-5791, ask for Norita Taylor.
