The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association is encouraging its members to contact their lawmakers in opposition of a bill that would increase motor carriers’ minimum insurance coverage to nearly $5 million.

In July, Reps. Matthew Cartwright, D-Pa., and Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, D-Ill., introduced the INSURANCE Act, or HR3781, that would raise the federal minimum insurance requirement for motor carriers from $750,000 to $4.923 million. The bill also would require the U.S. Secretary of Transportation to adjust the rate every five years to take into account in inflation costs related to medical care.

OOIDA is opposed to the bill, saying that it “will do absolutely nothing to improve safety.”

On FightingforTruckers.com, the Association has a form letter truck drivers can use to send to their respective lawmakers.

Ambulance chasers will be able to sue for higher amounts.

ATA megafleets who pay out that much every week because of the imbeciles they employ, will love it too because it'll crush many smaller fleets and independents.

If it were to happen, there would be an adjustment period, for sure.

In the end, it potentially hurts everyone, obviously hurting small business the most.

Insurance rates for owner-ops would skyrocket if this takes effect. The last time this was introduced, the bill's sponsor was married to an attorney who specializes in suing truckers involved in accidents, and was a partner in the firm himself, until elected to Congress

I think they should just make a bill outlawing anyone with less than 1000 trucks, then outlaw people from leasing to a company with a truck they bought like California is doing.

I know you can’t tell from the text but I’m being sarcastic. Another bill where the ATA is hard at work for you! (Also sarcasm)

I think that guy is probably a cosponsor on this one.

Ethics organization files complaint against Rep. Matt Cartwright

A nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting accountability, ethics and transparency in government recently filed a complaint to the Office of Congressional Ethics regarding Rep. Matt Cartwright’s introduction of a bill that could benefit his family’s law firm.

The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) asked the Office of Congressional Ethics to “immediately investigate Rep. Cartwright for taking official action in violation of House ethics rules.”
