OOIDA continues to support a federal ban on texting while driving for commercial operators, but the Association opposes the next step being taken by the FMCSA to restrict drivers’ use of hand-held mobile phones.
“OOIDA cannot support the current proposed restriction on use of hand-held cell phones by CMV drivers,” President and CEO Jim Johnston stated in comments filed Tuesday, Feb. 22.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration submitted its cell-phone proposal to the Federal Register on Dec. 21, 2010, not long after a ban on texting while driving became a final rule.
“Indeed, cell phone use is no more distracting than other types of communications and electronic equipment used regularly by truck drivers such as in-cab fleet management devices, global positioning and other navigation systems, and Citizens Band (CB) radios that have not received the same level of scrutiny by FMCSA.”
