North Carolina committee recommends tolled interstates, mileage tax

An appointed committee in North Carolina wants state lawmakers to consider tolling interstate highways and implementing a mileage-based tax to replace the state fuel tax.

The North Carolina 21st Century Transportation Committee, appointed by the state General Assembly, submitted a final report to lawmakers in December containing several recommendations for funding transportation and infrastructure.

Lawmakers will consider the recommendations over the course of the legislative session, which begins Jan. 28.

I've been following this for a while.
Sent at least 2 e-mails to local rep Carolyn Justus - not one reply.
Also about 3/4 down on their list of recommendations did you catch "stopping transfers from highway fund to general fund"?
They've been getting plenty of money from fuel tax but they've been draining it to spend elsewhere. That's been going on for years but nobody's said anything until some recent news reports on state's budget deficit.
I for one am fixin' to bring down a big hammer on someone's ass if they even try this BS.

California's at 8% what's NC at. Oh, and the news says people and business are bailing ou of CA like crazy, about 135k have left. But guess what? 245k heavily breeding aliens have replaced them, costing CA even more. Thanks Sen. Nancy the Penispuller. :sad:

Oh, and I got their ph.#'s and they both have offices downtown, not far from here at all.



I have written you previously regarding this subject but haven't received any replies.
This summer it was rumored that NC was considering making some portions of interstates toll roads. I asked for confirmation of this rumor.
I don't need that anymore as the national trucking organization I belong to issued the news on our website that a committee had recommended doing just that this week. Among the suggestions included "stopping" transfers from highway fund to general fund.
This has been going on for years and never should have been permitted in the first place.
It is the very reason that the fund is broke now.
If you think that I am going to allow the state to implement tolls to make up a shortfall due to the malfeasance of the state government - Y'all better think again.
The American taxpayers are fed up and fuming.
I hope y'all got enough sense not to pour gasoline on a fire.

Thank you for your concern about the implementation of new tolls on North Carolina's highways. I agree with you that transfers of funds from the Highway Trust Fund to the General Fund have led to the current transportation funding crisis we now face. This yearly looting of the Highway Trust Fund is something that I have been an outspoken advocate against for several years. I will continue to do all that I can to see that this unacceptable practice is stopped and that money in the Highway Trust Fund is used for what it was intended. Once we secure those funds, new burdensome taxes and tolls will be unnecessary.

I have read your response to one of your constituents about his concerns with the tolling of existing NC highways and the diversion (siphoning off) of highway fuel tax revenue.

I am not a resident of NC, but am effected by decisions such as these by your state legislature. I want to thank you for your position on this matter, and will give support in any way within my power. I will point out, with all due respect, that citizens have become tired of hearing words in letters and e-mails. We need to see action from representatives such as yourself. May I strongly suggest you do more. Hold interviews with the media about this issue and your position. Put out press releases about this robbing of the highway funds and the detrimental effect it's having on the citizens of your state, as well as citizens traveling through your state. Show us you are doing everything within your power which can be done. Words hidden in letters and e-mails with no longer suffice. It's time to truly do all you can to effect the positive change not only your constituents deserve...but Americans deserve.

Hey, that's what unity's all about.

I, too, took notice of that and the statement about the transfers occurring for over several years. We really need to see him stand up publicly and make the statements he has put in his response. Now that would make an impact.
