Top officials in the Mexican government plan to lobby the U.S. Senate to kill a bill already approved by the House that would delay the Bush administration’s cross-border pilot program.
Dow Jones reported Thursday, May 17, that Mexico’s economy minister contends the bill – HR1773 – violates provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement. That agreement called for opening the borders to trucks in 1995.
HR1773, known as the Safe American Roads Act of 2007, passed the House Tuesday by an overwhelming margin – 411 to 3. The next step in its passage into law is for the Senate to consider and pass similar legislation.
OOIDA has urged truckers to support the bill, which passed overwhelmingly in the House and would require that the U.S. Department of Transportation meet a long list of preconditions before a pilot program could begin.
