Let's Rant About Slow Trucks

Maybe this is a "Super Trucker" mentality but the difference between 62 and 67 mph is 50+ more miles a day. I get paid by the mile and do it safely at either speed, the Interstates have a posted speed limit that has been deemed safe by the transportation dept.'s and additionally find slower trucks a safety hazard in and of themselves.

Why? Because the majority of the flow is going posted and more, at 62 you're gonna be at 52 at the top of that hill that does not have a truck lane, during dusk and night hours those pinpricks we call "tail lights" are simply that, pinpricks and depth perception is funky.

Drive it slow if they make ya, I understand. But do the driving public a favor and use the S.T.H.'s. that are designed for slower speeds. Otherwise, pay for escorts to warn those of us driving the posted or thereabouts... put on the yellow flashylights and banners declaring yourself a hazard and placard yer arse with a huge orange triangle.

THE INTERSTATES ARE NOT EXPERIMENTAL RACE TRACKS FOR TRUCKING COMPANIES.

Interstates where designed for moving freight, large things, and troops. Notice those "OVERSIZED" loads have the above??? There is a very good reason why. If I had my way, drivers the maintain a much slower speed than indicated for a certain length of road would receive tickets for obstructing traffic. wait... isn't that already on the books??

Sorry for the rant... but it's just how I feel.

Everyone's needs are met differently, JBH fits you well.... good. Werner, Swift, Roehl, Schneider, Stevens, PRIME and all the rest will be someone's fit as well...

We all gotta eat.

Everyone knows that the slowers speeds are fuel savers. Face it most of the trucking companies have lowered their speeds. Being governed isn't always a bad thing. And one driver that you videotaped in dallas is not every single driver for the company. I have seen o/o's tear up trees and fences getting into tight spots......

I know, I know... Companies with lots of trucks save tons of money... in the meantime freight is stacking up and ...

I'm just having issues this morning.

If I had cake I would send you some, but I don't, I am trying to keep my girlish figure......hahahahaha!

This truck I have now does 69 mph. I can do a 690 mile day legally now. Last truck (this same company) did only 64 mph and a 650 mile day was a hard, long day. Don't try to tell me MPH doesn't make a difference. It makes huge difference. 62 MPH? nah.... I'll pass

As long as a vehicle is doing the minimum legal speed for the roadway, getting upset about how slow they are is pointless. They can do 45 or 50 or 55. Nothing you can do about, so no sense in getting sand all over your vaginas. ;)

(puts on flame-resistant suit)

I think all vehicles 26,001lb and heavier should be restricted to 65mph on cruise control & 67mph on the pedal.

Anyone in violation loses CDL for 1 year + $10,000 fine.

(awaits flame session)

I've recently gone from a really fast truck into a 65mph truck. I can get it turned up to 68mph, but don't want to spend the time at the dealer to get that done.

I whined about it loudly. Didn't want this new truck.

I would rather be driving faster, I feel it is safer.

As far as my income though, it has made no difference at all. I run 3-4k per week just as easily with this slow truck.

It would be so simple for carriers to control thier drivers speed other than cutting the trucks down to 60 whatever MPH.

Set them to run say 72mph but make the drivers understand that company policy is 60 whatever and that what ever percentage of time driving your over the company speed limit you loose that much in percentage of there pay.
Doing it this way still gives a drive the speed to make a pass then fall back in line and back to the company speed limit. If said driver want to run wide open 50% of a trip they loose 50% of there pay.

You are correct... nothing can be done about it if one sits on their arse and complains to the wall. I'm not sure the "Minimum" posted was ever intended to be an approved driving speed for normal vehicle operation on the interstate systems though.

Guess all it will take is another bus load of kids on their way to/from a marching band competition rear ending a slow moving vehicle with many injuries and worse to get anything accomplished.

As I said... drive what ever your company tells you to drive. If you don't like it, you can find one that is more conducive to your needs or start your own.

Sand is what makes pearls, dude.

I run at or near the speed limit wherever I am....If it's 75, I'll be running that and if it's 55, I'll be running about that. If someone is governed and is stuck running like a slug or "chooses" to run like a slug because he want to try to get better fuel mileage I have no problem with that.
The only time I really get annoyed with the slugs is when I'm running up behind them at 75 and they decide to pass the truck thay've been poking along behind for the last forty miles when I'm almost to the end of their trailer and they just jump out there in front of me...Funny thing is, After they try for 15 minutes to pass the guy that finally give up and move back over behind him most of the time.

That's why we call them idiots and other rude names!

The optimum speed of 65-69 mph.
In Europe, there is a limit, 56 miles per hour. And your tongue on your shoulder (tnx), because you have limited time. This is a dangerous game. Your average speed should be high.

We have bad roads, but our Freightliner 62 mph (tanker 33 cubic meters of oil). But my story is not to be interesting for you.

What happened this morning?

I think most trucks should be restricted to slower speeds... just not mine.

Used to be I had to get close enough to see the carrier name before I decided if I should go ahead and claim the passing lane. You know how it went... See a JBH, Pumpkin, or Swifty and you knew you were gonna' pass. Others you should hold the bumper lane 'til you knew for sure you'd have to pass. Now a days, I just ride the hammer lane. Seems I pass everybody.

I've tried the go slow thing a time or two. Run a 1,000 miles at the double nickle, then run 1,000 miles bumpin' the governor... 5.5 mpg either way I drove. Screw it... I want to get it done as quickly as possible, with style and grace and 55 ain't stylish nor graceful.

I guess you can thank the general public! I think they wanted the trucking industry to be more safety-conscious.

I don't have any statistics.. but I BET bartenders have been responsible for more deaths than all the truck drivers since the stage coach.

Let's have lawmakers introduce legislation for a CBL (Commercial Booze License), send them to a CBL school at a cost of say.... $10,000. and as part of the licensing evaluating process, put them in a meat wagon and attend a few fatal alcohol related accidents. Or better still... have them clean up the mess.

Then.. if a patron of theirs is involved in any vehicular accidents upon leaving, re-evaluate the license holder.

Let's have spot checks on the bartenders ability to guess the level of alcohol in a persons body.

More ideas?

I drive 57 mph usually. Occasionally, believe it or by, I will pass a slower truck. When I see that I am approaching the slower truck, I check out the surrounding traffic and adjust my speed, if necessary, to pass safely. I don't loose my cool, rant and rave and all that silly stuff. It really is very easy if you are a proactive driver.

And deservedly so!!

AlexGramm speeds at which you travel and the conditions traveled in are most definitely of interest to me. Thumbs up for having the courage to run at those speeds given some of the roads and conditions you face.

This morning I posted the 1st post of this thread as a reply to another poster and due to the nature of the post it was determined to have a better spot (not to mention it was borderline rude of me)
